20th Century Food Crimes, Cont. - Friday 7/14 - Period 1

It would seem that Summer's usual manic….let's call it charm...that she brought to the class weekly was a little diminished that week, but that didn't mean that she wasn't at least trying to put out the same enthusiastic energy for gross and disgusting and weird food choices of the past that she usually had.

Funny, that. Stark was still rather subdued at this point in the week as well. Not enough that he wasn’t here and watching Summer with the usual respectful interest and mild terror.

"Today," she announced with a lofty lift of her chin, "we'll be focusing on a very simple, very useful, very versatile, as you're about to see, ingredient, one loaded with nutrients, so any time you can squeeze it into something, all the better for you, right? Right! And that ingredient is the incredible, edible egg!"

Cue Summer holding up an open carton of them in case anyone needed the visual reminder of exactly what an egg was, or maybe it was just sort of a vague threat that she did, in fact, have eggs, and she knew how to use them in terrible ways.

“Eggs,” Stark repeated, narrowing his eye suspiciously. That seemed far too tame for a food crime class. “I’m worried, now.”

"This week's culinary evidence will come in the form of a curried egg pie, a hot tuna and egg sandwich, and, of course, eggs en gelee. That's a fancy word for jello.""

“Summer.” Stark was giving her a very disappointed look. Those poor eggs didn’t deserve this! Neither did Stark. Or the students. Hadn’t Ignis suffered enough?

(Clearly not).

Anytime a question, especially an 'are you' got cut off, Summer was going to lift an eyebrow and wonder exactly how it was going to be continued, but she could probably guess based on what it was switched to.

"Better than I was on Wednesday," she offered, and a good thing, too, or else these eggs would be a lot to handle, stomach-wise.

(More so than as presented, even!).

"How are you?"

Yeah, well, contrary to the impression that certain dead plant aliens seemed to have gotten over the last weekend, that was hardly Summer's responsibility.

She briefly considered asking about an elaboration on that mostly, but, figuring she probably wouldn't like the answer no matter which way it swung, she just pulled the egg carton closer. Plucked out an egg and held it put for Stark.

"Can I offer you a nice egg in this trying time?"

"It's straight from the carton!" Summer objected, with an overly offended gasp, that maybe worked well to cover her own almost-smile, very much in spite of herself. "You saw me take it out! Nothing's even been done to it yet!"

And there was a pause, a hesitation, and Summer blinked a little before her smile gained a little bit of extra saccharine sweetness, egg still held forward.

"Don't you trust me, Stark?"

Which was probably unfair, sure, but, well, so was knocking on her door with his dead girlfriend last weekend without even any warning.
somethingwithturquoise: (uh well...)

"Put it in jello," said Summer, because that really was an answer to all questions related to all things edible, "or in a gross sandwich or pie."

That was what they were here for, right?

"I do not recommend putting in your pocket for safe-keeping, it is raw."

Or maybe he could just slap a smile and some googly eyes on it and make a new friend to help with that whole loneliness issue.

Summer just sort of looked at Stark for a moment, and then placidly took the egg to place back into the carton herself.

"That," she said, closing the carton and sliding it along the countertop toward him, "is a much better idea."

"No," said Summer, with a slight shake of her head. "Make it a surprise.

"But..."

An idea was forming in her head. Could be a terrible idea. Could be the best idea. And there was only one way to find out for sure.

"I think I want to bake something, too."

"Mmhm," Summer confirmed with a nod. "You can bake your thing, and I'll bake mine, and then you can come over tomorrow and we'll share.

God. It barely even took effort anymore, did it?

Summer shrugged. "I don't know, maybe sometime in the afternoon? Around four? Four-twenty?"

What? Too on the nose?

"Perfect " said Summer, who finally let a small smile out, one that tilted pretty quickly into a smirk. "And here you were about to doubt how nice my eggs actually are, too."
somethingwithturquoise: (so high right now)

Summer narrowed and squinted her eyes at Stark a little as if putting these defenses under very careful scrutiny.

"Yeah, okay, fine," she finally relented. "That's actually pretty fair."
