Pizza!, Monday, First Period

Raiden continued to be both nervous and excited about this whole 'teaching about pizza' thing, and once his students were assembled this morning, he got right into it with, "So, we're gonna skip over focaccia because it's still not pizza, but I did bring some to snack on while we learn, and then work. And you can see how this is a more direct ancestor of pizza, right? It's a flatbread. You can put stuff on it.

"So pizza got started in Naples. It was working class food, something you'd buy from a pizzeria or even a hawker who'd bought his pizza from a pizzeria. Some places, you could even buy pizza by subscription! You'd pay your fee, and then you could pick up a pizza a day for the next week. Genius. Don't know why we don't have that now. The earliest documented actual pizza comes from the 18th century and it was the pizza marinara, and it didn't have any cheese on it. What it did have was a sauce of tomatoes, garlic, oregano, and olive oil." So it turned out that Rhode Island pizza was just ultra traditional. Who knew? "Another popular early pizza topping was one that's kind of controversial these days: anchovies. Because it was Naples. They were fishermen. They used what they had. Another option? Lard and basil. Hey, don't knock it until you've tried it.

"That brings us to our pizza of the day: the famous pizza margherita. Legend has it this pizza was invented for the queen of Italy in 1889, but that's not...that's not true. People were putting this stuff on pizza way before then, possibly back into the 1700s. It just got its name then, because it never hurts to suck up to royalty, and hey, it does have the colors of the Italian flag!

"For those of you who are unfamiliar with the pizza margherita, it's topped with tomato sauce, basil, and fresh mozzarella, so red, green, and white. Very simple, very delicious, and now we're gonna make some. You already have the dough--don't worry, we'll get to learning how to make that--so today we're just gonna assemble some pizzas and bake them. And eat them. That's the most important part." He proceeded to talk the students through how to shape the dough and prepare the toppings for a pizza margherita, demonstrating as he went and trying to keep an eye out for anyone having trouble. "And now we're just gonna put them on peels and transfer them to the oven to bake for eight minutes. It's nothing to be intimidated by, but I know that oven's really hot, so if you want me to do it for you, let me know."

It turns out Raiden knows a lot about pizza.

Mmm. Pizza.

Does he think this pizza would be better with some sausage on it, ooh, and maybe some peppers? Yes. Because Gluttony. Is he happily eating it anyway? Also yes.

TIL they used to top pizzas with lard.

Vi was possibly putting too much effort into trying to figure out the optimal ratio of toppings, given there were a whole three of them.

And, really, Ignis was here just as much for the pizza knowledge as the pizza itself. After all, if he just wanted to make pizza, he could easily do so in his own kitchen, so these little morsels of trivia were particularly interesting to him, especially in the way pizza history varied on this planet compared to what he was used to, and only confirmed that Altissia was basically just Eos's version of Italy.

Connor could figure this out. How hard could it be?

Turns out pretty hard when he couldn't decide how much of each ingredient he wanted to include on his pizza. And never mind the daunting tasks of then trying to bake it without burning it!

Charlie Gale

"Um..." Charlie stepped away from the cooking area, hands firmly behind her back. "I'm not allowed to cook."

Nick Cutter

Cutter had considered not turning up to class, since his angry text exchange with Connor and while he did try to avoid looking over in Connor’s direction as he worked on his pizza, he did keep glaring over every now and then.

Ok, the side eye from Cutter was proving more distracting than he had thought, those times Connor did glance over and caught a view of Cutter. He wanted to go over and say something, but he bit his tongue and tried to focus on his pizza. Though, thinking about cooking and Cutter being there reminded him of the times they had tried cooking together... which was not doing anything to help his mood.

TIL pizza subscriptions were a thing and I agree we need to bring those back.

"Says who?" Raiden asked. "Because this is my class workshop thing and I never said that."

Cutter wanted to go over and say something, to ask about the texts but then he didn’t and just glared back at Connor, even though he was feeling a little sad as he did. He was missing Connor but he was still angry about the weekend.

If Cutter wasn't going to bother taking the effort to talk to him or to apologize then Connor wasn't going to either. (perfectly logical there, really). So, he tried to keep himself busy with the assignment, still glancing over coldly at Cutter now and then. He was still angry about things and also angry with himself that he couldn't seem to just ignore Cutter and act like he wasn't there.

Cutter was getting angrier now as Connor didn’t seem to want to talk to him …which admittedly he wasn’t even sure what he could say, so it was probably a good thing that they weren’t talking.

Instead he kept making his pizza, rather angrily and making more of a mess than was necessary as he kept looking up and glaring at Connor.

Charlie opened her mouth to explain and her phone rang. "Sorry, it's my aunties, just a second."

The voice on the other end of the line was loud enough for everyone in class to hear. "Charlotte Marie Gale!! Tell me you are not about to attempt cooking something. Auntie Ruby said she had a terrible feeling and I needed to call you immediately. Have you forgotten the brownie incident?!?!?"

Charlie gave Raiden sheepish look. "I haven't forgotten Auntie Jane, but my teacher -"

"Put him on! NOW!" Auntie Jane demanded and Charlie handed the phone over to Raiden. "Now I'm sure you're a perfectly responsible teacher," she said in quieter tones, "but you simply mustn't allow Charlotte Marie to cook anything. Her abilities just get out of hand and - well, after the last time... we're not sure anything will ever grow again on that part of the lawn. Trust me on this."

Well, at least if he manages to not burn it to a crisp you won't have to worry about buying him food for the next day or two Connor thought to himself as he cast a glance over at Cutter. Though despite the anger and hurt he still felt, he was still already thinking of how long it had been since Cutter had probably done any shopping.... And Connor shook his head and sighed. Why was he bothering to worry about it?> It wasn't like he was worried or missed Cutter or anything....

Eleanor was definitely focused on trying to make a good pizza.

SHe hoped, maybe, if she tried making one for Rhys next time she saw him, he'd find it so absurd, it might snap him out of his fugue a little. Maybe even make him smile.

A fool's hope, probably. But still...

Maybe she could get her aunt Margaret to try it, too.

Cutter had not gone food shopping since he’d been back at Fandom and had been living in the Chinese leftovers for the last few days.

He was trying to make this pizza work because he’d had a similar thought process, that he wouldn’t have to worry about food or ordering anything …

The next time he looked over at Connor, it was more sad than angry …he wished he could go over and just talk. It he had no idea what to even say.

When Connor caught Cutter's gaze again, he saw the sad look and tried to turn away before his own feeling were betrayed. He hated this, how things were between them... but what was he supposed to say? What could he say? How was he supposed to fix this?

And Cutter looked sadly down at his pizza when Connor turned away again, he had finished preparing his pizza …it wasn’t the best looking but assuming he managed to not completely burn it, it would be edible at least.

He focused on putting the pizza in, every now and then he still looked over at Connor, wishing that things weren’t like this and he could talk to him again.

Connor's pizza was in the oven now, and he was using that as a good excuse to not look over to see how Cutter was fairing. He didn't want the pizza to burn after all. And once it was done hopefully, he could just slip out without having to talk to Cutter.

As it became clear that Connor was focusing his effort on his pizza, Cutter eventually stopped looking over at Connor, trying to ignore the empty feeling in his stomach as he did.

He stared down at his hands as he waited for his pizza, flinching a bit as he did.

When things were done, Connor got the pizza out of the oven and despite his best attempt not to, he glanced over at Cutter to see how he had faired, though he tried to be quick and as inconspicuous as possible.It was clear Cutter didn't want to talk or anything so he really shouldn't be that concerned about how he was fairing. But it was Cutter, and he just couldn't help himself.

Cutter took out his pizza, it was burnt slightly and it looked like a mess but compared to previous efforts it wasn't that bad and it was at that moment he looked over to try and make eye contact with Connor.

And part of him was also curious to see what Connor's pizza had ended up looking like as well.

Okay, the eating was definitely the important part, but making it wasn't bad, either. TJ could do this.

She was possibly munching some of the mozzarella as she put it on the pizza.

Eventually, his curiosity won over and Connor chanced another glance at Cutter. The faintest hint of a smile appeared for a second or two. He had at least managed to end up with something edible, it looked like. And it turned out he had been fairly successful too other than some burnt edges and some extra toasted toppings.

It was a lot better than their other attempts at cooking... which made the lump in Connor's throat grow as he thought about those times with Cutter.

Cutter met Connor's gaze then, seeing that very tiny smile for a moment and he offered a very small one in return.

He was also thinking about their last cooking efforts and he felt a pang of sadness as he thought back to that, he held Connor's gaze for another moment and then he had to look away. He felt tears start to form in his eyes and the last thing he wanted was to break down crying in class.

Connor pulled his attention away at about the same time, blinking against the burning behind his eyes. He would have gladly blamed it on slicing up onions, but there was not an onion to be seen. So, Connor kept himself busy and distracted until class was finally over.

"Who...who is Charlotte Marie?" Raiden asked, confused. He had no idea what was happening or why he was holding a phone. "Are you Charlotte Marie?" he asked Charlie. And then he asked the phone, "Ma'am, what exactly is the worst thing you think could happen from putting some tomato sauce on some dough, because I promise you the worst cook I know couldn't burn down a kitchen doing that."

They wouldn't let Bellamy put the pizza in the oven, of course, but that was beside the point.

"Charlotte Marie Gale," Auntie Jane said very slowly as if speaking to a somewhat slow child. "The young woman I was just speaking to."

Charlie was nodding and trying not to facepalm too hard. "I'm Charlotte Marie."

"Charlotte Marie is a Wild Power," Auntie Jane said, "and for whatever reason - my sisters and I are fairly sure it's just to torment the family because ALL Gale girls are excellent cooks - her power goes even more wild when she attempts even the most basic of recipes. The lawn will never recover and I'm not sure Aunt Alice will ever fully recover her hair after the lemonade incident. Believe me, you do NOT want this girl even doing anything as seemingly simple as putting together pizza ingredients. You have been warned."
