Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Even if a new term wasn't starting soon, today would be the perfect day for a picnic. The weather was calm and warm, the food table was full, and there was a respectable amount of glitter on the decorations. There might have been a bigger party going on somewhere else, but here it was time to celebrate the start of summer!

“My coworker’s daughter was only a few months older than your little one when she accidentally locked another colleague in a jail cell,” Watts mused, as he peered down at her. “Though to be fair, the way I heard it, Detective Murdoch did put her in the cell first.”

"A future bailiff in the making, huh?" Prompto asked with a grin, but then his head tilted. "Bailiff? Is that the right term? Anyway, hopefully we can avoid any of that by keeping Noctra out of any jail cells. Only bars I want this nugget seeing are the ones on her crib."

There was, however, a pause.

"Although now I gotta ask.....what was the kid doing in there in the first place?"

“Ah, well- it was either that or take her to a crime scene,” Watts told him. “And even though it was just a newsstand robbery, that’s no place for an infant,” he leaned down towards Noctra, making a goofy face at her.

And Noctra seemed to be all geared up to maybe smile or make approving babbles at the sound of her dad's voice and another, unfamiliar one, even at Watts' face, at first, until he made the goofy face, and then she was just...

Clearly, she did not know what to make of that, but maybe blowing a few bubbles of spit in response would help her figure it out.

"Yeah," said Prompto, "I guess I could see that, if that's the only other option."

Well, from Watts’s delighted smile, clearly that was close enough to a good reaction, so far as he was concerned.

“At least you’ve a few more months before you need to worry about this one wandering about,” Watts said.

At which point perhaps he’d be interested in Murdoch’s baby leash tether?

That one might need to go to Liz. If Prompto had his way, Noctra would be as free range a baby as she could be. He even felt bad, sometimes, keeping her contained in just her own crib....

Literal test tube baby problems.

But Prompto couldn't help grinning proudly, at that delighted smile on Watts' face, feeling all sorts of proud, warm feelings about his kid being such a charmer, apparently. "We've been kind of working on it a little bit," he said. "We were doing push-ups together the other day, so she's almost there, figuring out how those weird limb things work and everything. I tell her if she keeps it up, I won't have to unleash Gladio on her, and that seems like a pretty good motivator so far."

“Of course,” Watts nodded solemnly. “She may not be mobile quite yet but nor would you want her sitting idle.”

Was he joking, or entirely serious? Hard to say.

Prompto seemed to find it amusing, either way it was meant, with a soft little huff of a laugh, and a shake of his head. "I'm probably going to regret this conversation before long," he said. "When she's crawling circles around me one day. But it's kind of fascinating, really, watching her just sort of....figuring things out..."

“What an amazing feeling that must be,” Watts mused. “Seeing everything for the first time.”

"It's definitely something we kind of take for granted, isn't it?" Prompto mused right back, his smile softening significantly as he looked back down into the stroller and Noctra within it, her hands making little curling fists in the air at nothing while she just sort of made gawking noises at the blueness of the sky. "What it's like to just have everything so fresh and new and amazing..."

“Not something that’s easy to recapture, that’s for certain,” Watts said.
