An Introduction to Zoology - Friday, 1st Period

That morning Cutter had arranged for both his classes to meet at serenity cove, he was feeling a lot better from the weekend and his bandages were now gone so he had more use of his hands, “this morning we’re going to be doing something a little different and go on a fossil hunt around the serenity cove and light house area, this area has proved to be rather successful in finding fossils, so I thought that we could have ourselves a bit of a hunt around this area and see just what we can find here,” he said with a smile.

“There are four types of fossils that you can look out for,” Cutter continued, “they are trace fossils - which are preserved with an animal’s behaviour or activity such as trilobite tracks,” no one was surprised at all by this point that Cutter had mentioned trilobites were they? “And then there are fossils with some organic material preserved such as a removal of all organic material except carbon, which remains as a film in the rock and mineralised fossils which is where a organic matter is replaced gradually by mineral such as Replacement of organic material in bone with minerals and finally impression fossils, which when the remains decay completely but leave an impression in the sediment and examples of these can include internal impressions such as trilobites and external ammonites or impressions of armoured fish or tree barks,”

“and today I’m being joined Connor Temple, he teaches Dinosaurs 101 with me, if you need help or having any questions you can ask either myself or Connor and we’ll be happy to assist,” Cutter smiled over at him, trying not to worry that Connor would be doing so much walking but Connor had assured him that he was fine with small brace and he would be able to manage to do the hunt, “happy hunting,” he said with a smile and let his classes go off to to explore.

Look for fossils, see what you can find!

When they ping in

So not looking forward to work tomorrow.

Cutter was there, when he wasn't having a look around and see if he could also find any fossils, yes he was trying to see if could find fossils that had trilobites.

Jo was realising very quickly that she was not appropriately dressed for fossil hunting in her long skirt and blouse and she kept slipping and stumbling as she looked around to see what she could find.

Connor was definitely there picking his way along the edge of he water looking for fossils a bit himself.

Towards the end of the hunt Connor walked... or more hobbled... over to Cutter and sat down on one of the larger rocks near the water.

"Well, took me forever, but I finally found a good one" he said with a grin as he held out a tan stone to Cutter. One side was rough and tan like a regular stone and on the other side was a fairly well-preserved trilobite.

Cutter’s eyes lit up as he took in the trilobite that Connor was holding, “you found one!” he gushed excitedly as he carefully took the stone from Connor to have a look, “oh it’s beautiful,” he exclaimed, “I haven’t had much luck finding one,” he admitted.

"Lucky me choosing the right spot to sit and poke around in the mud," Connor said with a grin. "Found a really cool shell imprint too. Left it up on the shore for the class. But wanted to make sure you got that," he said with a nod toward the trilobite. "I know how much you like them after all" he said with a small wink remembering how long they had spent just looking at the trilobites at the museum a while back.

Cutter smiled warmly at that as he looked over the fossil, “this is incredible,” he smiled, “and I do find trilobites fascinating,” he said sheepishly, “I could talk about them for hours,”

He then looked up at Connor, “how are you feeling?” he asked gently, “how is your ankle holding up?”

"Oh it's holding up pretty good... twinging a little but been trying to keep off it as much as I can" he said as he leaned against the rock a little more.

He looked at Cutter and the fossil stone in his hand.

"And you? Hands not giving you much trouble anymore?"

Cutter nodded, “if it’s too much for you, we can finish up early and head back to my flat if you’d like?” he offered and then looked down at his hands, “they’re pretty good now, they’re just a little stiff and there’s a bit of light scarring but I think that should fade,” he considered.

"I should be ok as long as I stay off it till class is done" Connor said with a smile. "But heading back to your place afterward sounds good too. I'll just need to pop in and check on Rex real quick once we are back."

"But I am glad your hands are mostly mended, and yeah, hopefully the scaring won't last since they were thankfully fairly superficial," which Connor had been very worried about at first.

“I think they just looked worse than they actually were,” Cutter admitted, “but I think it’s fairly safe now to say there’s no harm done, they should be good as new in a week or so,” he paused, “i could check on Rex if you’d like, so you don’t have to walk on your ankle as much, or if you wanted I could even bring Rex back round to my place, we could watch him there?”

"Oh if ya don't mind the trouble, bringing Rex over would be good I think. Ya know how much he likes ya, Nick. Sure he'd love to see ya for a bit," Connor said with a grin.

Cutter returned the grin, "it's no trouble at all, I would be happy to have Rex round, it would be nice to see him as well," he assured Connor.

"Sounds like a plan then" Connor said with a grin. "Thanks, will definitely be easier taking care of him with someone a little more mobile than I am right now. I swear the guy deliberately gets more mischievous when he knows I'm not quite up to snuff" Connor added with a laugh and fond smile.

"You're welcome, you can both stay over as long as you need to," Cutter smiled, "I'm sure I can keep Rex out of trouble for you,"

Or there would somehow be even more trouble, knowing Cutter's track record with these things.

"I'm sure you will" Connor said with a smirk and a slight head tilt. "Just... you know, keep the windows in the flat closed this time."

Cutter did look sheepish at that, "I mean Rex only made it to the window sill, he was fine, I did manage to catch him before he flew off,"

That wasn't the point Cutter.

"Aye... that is true," Connor said though he was giving Cutter a certain look just then. "Rex is usually pretty good about coming back the few times he has gotten out. But still.... rather than push our luck more than we have to, ya know?"

Cutter shifted just a bit, still looking sheepish, "I promise to make sure all the windows are locked this time," he assured Connor with a smile, "Rex is not going to escape in my watch ..." he paused, "this time,"

"Then it's settled" Connor said with a smile. "Once the fossil hunt wraps up, we can head back."

Cutter smiled, "I do like the sound of that, it sounds like the perfect way to spend the rest of the day, I'm looking forward to it," he added.

"Will give us time to start packing and making sure everything is ready for our trip too" Connor pointed out. "That's coming up quite quickly!"

Cutter smiled warmly at that, "that is true, I ... I haven't even started packing yet," he admitted, "I suppose I should really get started on that, I can't put it off any longer since we're leaving Sunday,"

"I'll probably just throw everything in my duffle bag and call it done" Connor admitted. "But yeah we probably should start packing- gonna be gone for a few days. Really looking forward to it!"

“Same here,” Cutter smiled warmly, “our first official trip away, I mean that wasn’t a school trip,” he amended, “but it will be nice for us to get away for a few days, spend some time on the mainland,”

"First trip, just the two of us... sounds amazing. I can't wait to see the National Museum of Natural History. It sounds brilliant! Did you know they have whole exhibit halls dedicated to different animals, evolutionary studies, and even a fossil lab?" Yes, Connor was very excited about the trip, in case that wasn't clear.

Cutter’s eyes lit up at that, “I didn’t know that, I’ve never been there before but some of my colleagues at the university had, it sounds brilliant,” he smiled, “and we’re going to have a full day there to be able to explore the museum and everything," he looked down at the trilobite fossil in his hand, "do you think they'll have displays on trilobites?"

Cutter was also very excited about this trip.

"I am sure they have trilobites and many other amazing things. It sounds so great... I'm not sure even a full day will be long enough! But I am definitely planning to see as much of it as possible!"

Cutter smiled, "this will be brilliant, I'm glad that we're doing this for our first weekend trip away and we can always go back right?" his smile widened, "whatever we don't fit in for our first visit, we can come back for another trip,"

Connor returned the smile."Exactly! And there's nearly two dozen museums and gardens associated with the main one we are going to see. So I think it's safe to say we could keep ourselves busy with trips for some time!"

Cutter smiled happily, "it sounds perfect, I'm looking forward to everything and getting to see it all with you,"
