The Hylian Bestiary; Thursday, Third Period [03/23].
There was another fantastic piece of artwork on the board again this week, this time a hulking humanoid figure with a big jaw and a single eye in the center of its single-horned which, really, as far as Sidon's drawing went, wasn't really that bad! It definitely gave the impression of the creature they were talking about today, anyway, enough that anyone with even passing knowledge of them would recognize it for what it was.
"Welcome back!" he greeted the class brightly as usual. "Last week, of course, we talked about stals and how the power of the Calamity allows for some creatures to find a new life even after death, and one of those creatures mentioned was the stalnox, which comes from a creature we have yet to discuss in this class so far, so now is clearly the time to remedy that. The Hinox!
"The hinox," he continued, eager and excited, as always, "is one of the larger creatures of Hyrule, one that puts even my towering height to shame! In addition to their immense size, they are known for their single eye at the center of their foreheads, and for their precious horns would can be used in many things! They can be found in all parts of Hyrule, and are rather sleepy creatures, really, as they are often found merely just taking a nap, without much regard for where they are, though they do tend to find a resting spot amid circles of trees or sometimes on small, perfectly hinox-sized islands. Why are they always so tired all the time? Some suggest that is their immense size that wears them out; some say it is simply their nature, but it is anyone's guess, as a hinox is not likely to answer with anything but a fist or a swung tree uprooted from the ground should anyone deign to ask.
"Because that is the other side of a hinox, truly, its violence. When not sleeping, it prefers to be attacking, by any means necessary, which sometimes means pulling out trees to act as a club with which to strike anything nearby! The hinox is often sometimes distracted or attracted to shiny things, and they have a great fondness for weapons and collecting them, which they will then wear around their necks in a necklace-like fashion to show off their collection. This is particularly a point of pride for hinoxes who do not merely find their weapons, but have in fact earned them by defeating foes!
"They are known to be somewhat clever in their strategy, not only employing trees as weapons, but also nearby boulders, rocks, other creatures, and whatever else may be at hand, and many have adapted to wearing armor to protect themselves, as well. After all, a hinox is but flesh and muscle as most creatures, and are therefor vulnerable to your typical attacks. The stalnox, however, has no such flesh or muscle, and its bones are big and strong, so unlike its smaller stal counterparts, a stalnox can only be defeated by destroying its single eye! This is also an extremely sensitive part for all hinoxes, so when planning to go up again one, it may not hurt to brush up on your archery and your aim!
"Now, I know there are creatures in Earthen lore, such as the cyclops and the oni, that resemble the hinox quite a bit, so we can perhaps use that as a fuel for our discussion today: what other creatures do you know of that are like a hinox, if any, in story or personal experience? Do you have theories on why they are so sleepy all the time? If you were a hinox, what sort of weapons would you like to collect? There are many different ways we can take this, so let's begin with if the are any questions!"
