Intro to Starship Maintenance- Tuesday

Jaina looked a little too pleased today when the students got to the Danger Shop, which looked like a carrier ship's hangar, with a battle going on outside. Be scared.

"You've met one of the bombers," she said, patting the hull of the ship in front of them. "This one's got a stuck torpedo. But it's really needed in that battle out there, so you're going to get flown out in the middle if it, and then free up the live torpedo at the right time. This could go very badly. But at least it's not permanent."

On the one hand, this was a much bigger-scale (well, arguably) crisis than what had happened at Cauldron Gemini, and it ought to have felt like a lot more pressure.

On the other hand, this was a simulation where Beta didn't actually know any of the sentient beings involved in the conflict, and she didn't have to worry about aggressive machine creatures trying to directly attack her or any of the small handful of people who she actually cared about.

And, well. She was the clone of a woman who'd come to the logical conclusion that all the military force Earth could muster would have to be sacrificed against an unstoppable robot swarm just to buy time for a plan that would be able to re-establish life on the planet centuries after they were all gone. More to the point, she was the clone who'd been raised by AIs in virtual reality and had maybe a year's worth of meaningful contact with sentient beings who weren't the literal worst, so... it wasn't actually that hard to be detached enough to stay relatively calm and do her work here.
