Cultivation and Gardening, 6th period
Zhaan had appropriated a microscope capable of magnifying highly enough to see cell membranes. It was sitting on the table, taking pride of place while she poked through the box of slides she'd also scrounged.
As the class arrived, she absently waved at them before tossing the box into the trash can, causing the sound of breaking glass. She frowned, then opened the box of blank slides, "This is very unfortunate. I should have been better prepared..." Without waiting for the class to respond, she slipped out the door, muttering about Batou finally being some use.
Ten minutes later, she returned, a little short of breath, but smiling pleasantly. She set the box of slides down and carefully placed a now-bloodied slide to one side. "I'm afraid I should have remembered to get a blood sample before class, but I was distracted." She picked out another slide and poked her own finger, watching the small droplet fall before quickly setting the small square of glass atop it. "There."
Glancing up at the class, she began her lecture, "There are differences between plants and animal-base d life forms. The obvious ones are of course they look entirely different. However, at a microscopic level, one can see that cells differ greatly, depending on where their biology derives."
"Plant cell walls, the existence of chloroplasts, even the very structure differs. Plant cells are more rectangular, with a central vacuule of water while animal cells are round." She placed the animal cell slide into the microscope and peered through, focusing, "What a very... antiquated piece of equipment," she murmured before stepping back to allow the students their turn at viewing the slide.
"As you can see, the cells are rounded and globular." After the students had looked, she replaced the slide with the one containing her own blood, and spent a little bit longer twiddling the knobs, "These cells, on the other hand, well, they're more elegant, for a start."
Stepping back, she absently sucked on her pricked finger. Flexing her toes in the bunny slippers, she finally was reminded to end her lecture. "Under a more powerful microscope, I imagine you'd be able to catalog more differences. There are, however, commonalities. Golgi, ribosomes, even the nucleus, though placed differently.
"In the end, plants and animals are not all that different from each other." She smiled. "Please have a lovely weekend, I'll see you Wednesday."
[My extreme apologies for the lateness. I ran errands and then there was Foyle to watch and I came up with the class idea (thanks to the fabulous Ryuu, who has since gone to bed and who I can't think, and who probably would think I'm insane anyway), ran down to do laundry and came back up to the end of SG-1 and. er. sorry. *flees* ps. Batou abused totally without his permission, as she's in the shower. pps. yes, I think we talked about plant cells prior to this, but I'm certain there was no finger-pricking.]
