Non-Deadly Heroics, Monday, Period Two

"Communication!" Aphra started, her grand gesture someone ruined by the marzipan fruit bouncing off her. "It's the cornerstone of keeping yourself alive, especially when working with other people."

"After all, it's kind of awkward when the rest of your team has somehow got the wrong idea into their heads about your goal, or the issue of payment, or any one of a thousand minor details."

Not that anyone here had ever been or would ever be in that kind of situation. Especially not deliberately. Ever.

"So today we're going to play a game where you have to communicate with the rest of the class without any kind of written or spoken language!"

They were great communicators who always conveyed exactly what they wanted the other person to know.

There's a stack of cards with things for you to try to communicate and for the rest of the class to try to figure out.

Though you're going to have to use charades for that too.

Graham Cracker

Graham was pretty excited about this; he felt like it might be a game he would hopefully be good at. He knew words! He could be expressive! And he looo~oo~ooved gestures! So he was eager to jump right in, picking out a card, and considering it thoughtfully as he tried to think of how to best convey it.

So he cleared his throat (yes, yes, he knew the activity was non-verbal, it was a mental clearing of the throat, so to speak), straightened his shoulders, and held up a hand for a moment as a base. And then his hand went up straight up in the air a little and then he curved it and swooped it down to one side, with a little curve up again at the very end.

Charlie Gale

"Flying?" Charle]e guessed.

Graham's eager hope that Charlie would get it straight away (since they were so in tune with each other already, and everything! Right?) deflated pretty quickly with her answer, shoulders sagging and head wagging in dismay. But then he put his fingers to his chin to think of another way to maybe better convey his word, came up with a new idea, and nodded confidently.

He nodded at Charlie again to let her know he was trying again, lifted a finger and then...moved quickly, in what was almost like a dance step, just a glide to the side, with his cape trailing behind him and his hands moving out to put a little extra oomph and pizzazz into the move.

Belle

(Sadly for Charlie and Graham, Charlie's mun was so bad at charades it was embarrassing.)

"Glide?" Please don't blame poor Charlie.

Belle hoped her word would be recognizable. She held up her hand and then moved her index finger in a motion like it was crawling.

Blame her? Graham looked downright ecstatic at that guess, because, yes, yes! He nodded enthusiastically, waving his hand encouragingly because, oooooh, she was almost there, she was so close!

So he repeated the first gesture--hand cutting up straight before swooping down to one side--then the second, the smooth gliding move to the side, and then added a third, brushing one palm forward against the other in a forward motion.

"Ooh!" said Graham excitedly. "Is it a worm? A caterpillar? A snake??"

"Slide?!" Charlie said with an excited hopefulness.

"Yes!" Graham confirmed with a laugh, pumping his fist in the air before meeting Charlie with an awe-struck look. "It was 'slide'! Amazing, Charlie! You got it! I guess the third time really is a charm," he chuckled a little, far too proud of himself for that one, "isn't it?"

"Caterpillar!" Belle confirmed, delighted. "Well done, Graham!"

"Yes! Total high five!" Charlie chortled, raising a hand to Graham. "And yes, charm is just the word!"
