Hyrule History and Legends!; Friday, Second Period [11/04].
"Good morning, everyone!" Sidon, with all his usual excitement and eagerness, greeted the class with a mighty gesture and a broad, toothy grin. There was, of course, another drawing on the board to enlighten them to today's topic of discussion, and, honestly? It wasn't even that bad this week! That, of course, had nothing to do with Sidon't artistic talent improving and much more to do with the fact that it didn't take a whole lot of skill to draw shape of a Goron or the silhouette of large singular volcanic peak.
"Today, we are taking a moment to mentally explore Death Mountain, the ominously named volcanic peak that rises up from the Eldin region amognst a rocky and scorching terrain. Due to its extreme< heat, not many citizens of Hyrule can actually venture deep into the depths of the mountains surrounding Death Mountain, including...or perhaps," here he chuckled, "I should say especially us Zora, who are a bit more sensitive to extreme climates. Not even the more hearty and heat-comfortable Gerudo can be comfortable in the fiery air surrounding the mountain, although some clever people have managed to make special Fireproof Elixirs to build their defenses against the heat and fire, as well as special equipment and armor to help fight off the burn! So a trip to Death Mountain is a rare one, and one that requires a lot of attention to protection if one is not already resilient to fire already.
"But!" This came out particularly dramatic, and he flashed another toothy grin. "I am not here to convince you all to venture into the lava-lakes and smoking crags of Death Mountain for your winter vacation! No, indeed! We are here today to talk about the people who call such a sweltering summit their home, none other than the mighty Goron people, who make their home in Goron City at the base of the Death Caldera."
And, yes. He did drop his voice to be appropriately ominous-sounding there!
"The Gorons themselves are a hearty people...as one might expect when one learns that they themselves are made entirely of rock! It is no wonder, then, that they can handle such harsh climates! And because of this heartiness, a Goron has the freedom to travel to nearly any climate of Hyrule and be quite comfortable, and, in fact, especially since so few are able to visit them, they are quite fond of travel, and it will be rare to go somewhere and not see a Goron traveler, either relaxing at a stable, trading ores in various villages, or just along the roads and byways that intersect the great land of Hyrule! There is very little physical variation in Gorons, to the point where some say males and females are quite indistinguishable from each other...in fact, some say that they are a strictly male race, and that they are born from the very rocks that surround them, though this is just myth, and I cannot attest to the truth in that! They spend their lives mining fine ores and gems from the mountains, which they not only use to trade with other citizens of Hyrule, but also for consumption, as their diet is almost entirely of rocks and minerals! And to think! Some say that I have mighty teeth, although one does wonder about their potential need for a dentist!"
Sidon chuckled a little at his own joke before continuing.
"Now, the Gorons, too, were gifted a Divine Beast to pilot against the Calamity when he attacked, and theirs is the mighty Vah Rudania, piloted by their Champion Daruk! I have heard it told that they have built an absolutely breathtaking monument to their Champion that looms over Goron City, much like we Zora have such a statue dedicated to our own Champion Mipha," a small, sad smile there, "but I have not seen it for myself. I would absolutely love to, though, as the tales I've heard of it say it is quite impressive indeed!
"One thing a Goron holds important above all things is strength, and it is not uncommon for them to engage in many competitions of such skills against each other, and with others! Surely, one way to instantly earn yourself respect as an 'honorary Goron' is to show of your prowess in strength! Sometimes, they are said to be a bit wary about letting outsiders into their fold, but no matter where you're from or who you are, if you exhibit strength and power, you instantly earn their respect and a place in their mighty brotherhood!
"But it's not all strength games with these solid folk, either! They enjoy recreation in the form of singing and dancing and soaking in hot springs, the latter of which I can certainly appreciate, even though I'm quite sure I'd turn into a Zora stew were I to attempt to sit in their springs, which I imagine are a bit less hot and a bit more boiling! They will often decorate themselves with body paint to suit their fashion and style at the time, and they have this wonderful ability to just roll themselves up into tight balls and boulders to roll around, making traveling long distances surely a dizzying breeze!
"But that is," Sidon concluded with a nod, "mostly all there is to say about the Gorons in a broad overview. Even if one cannot make the rather arduous and heated trek into Death Mountain to visit them, one may still experience the company of these stolid, joyful, steadfast people throughout all of Hyrule, as they have a traveling spirit themselves and enjoy sharing the wealth of their mines with the world, and we are all quite richer because of it....and not just because of their mining efforts!
"So...what do you think?" He looked to them eagerly. "Is Death Mountain a place you might like to visit...despite the name? Or perhaps because of it! What would you be most interested to learn or see about the Gorons? As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts and questions!"
