Intro to Fandom, Monday 10/31, First Period
"Today is Halloween," said Summer, barely able to get that statement out before a small shower localized right over her head dumped a bunch of candy over her, and she sighed, "which is a holiday here on Earth that has a wide variety of different forms of celebration, although the most popular, overly commercialized versions involve candy, costumes, and a general leaning toward spooky things, out of the holiday's origins as a time when the boundary between the living world and the spiritual one is at its thinnest."
“Sometimes,” Stark said, “people think that what’s on the Other Side doesn’t stay there for Halloween.”
"And in Fandom," Summer added with a nod, "sometimes what's on the Other Side doesn't stay there hardly at all. I mean, this place is a multidimensional nexus, and that includes dimensions of the dead, undead, unalive, whatever you want to call it. We have zombies in one bar, the other one is run by a vampire and the literal devil. The general store is owned by some kind of soul reaper type guy, although he'll call himself a death god because he thinks it impresses women."
Cue the eyeroll. 'Matter of translation,' her ass. Her boss was the worst.
“There was a ghost who taught here before,” Stark said.” And, and there’s me as well. I’m attuned to the dying. I deal with the dead. Not very often here but it’s what I’m for. But I’m not dead even if I did get executed once. I got better.”
Aaaand Summer was pretty sure she’d just found the new 'shot, but just a little.' She made a quick little mental note before moving onto their next Checkmark of the Dead. "There's also," she added, "the occasional weekend where the dead come back to life. Tying into last week, this can mean invasions of vampires, ghouls, zombies, ghosts, and other things that go bump in the night, but there's also sometimes where loved ones who have died in the past show up to, like, make amends or whatever. My brother always shows up for that one, and I usually end up kicking his ass at Meta Italian Plumber Racing Game."
“My…Zhaan has come back. For me,” Stark said, going quiet suddenly. “Not to make amends. Just to…just to check on me, I think. It’s been startling, both times. But a good thing. A very good thing.” The seriousness of his tone was undercut by the plastic spiders suddenly falling on his head. "Maybe I ought to stop talking?"
Summer, for her part, did a very good job of not letting her soft smile turn into something else at those spiders. "Or at least," she suggested, "let someone else take a turn." She gestured toward the students, in case anyone missed that that was who she meant. "So,what do you guys have? Let's talk dead things this week."
