The Art of Peace; Thursday, Third Period [10/20].
Unfortunately, there would be no comfy cushions and tea for the students that week (unless you were particularly fond of gym mats, anyway). There was, regrettably, a note on the door, a note that was clearly from their teacher by the liberal use of hearts scattered across the pink flowery paper, to cover the bases in case they had missed the handwavey message to be prepared for movement in today's lesson, as well as to dress appropriately for such a thing.

Please meet me in the gymnasium, little ducklings!
I hope you're feeling limber this morning!
♥♥♥♥♥
Of course, when they got to the gym, Shunsui was still robed and hatted as usual, waiting for them. The floor was scattered with mats, and Shunsui had removed his geta so he stood barefoot and ready, seemingly his only concession to his own 'dress for movement' directive.
And he wasn't alone, either. Also questionably dressed for movement in her tight jeans and leather jacket was Rosa Diaz, looking absolutely thrilled to be here, really.
(Actually, she was starting to enjoy helping with this particular exercise over the years, but she certainly wasn't going to admit to that or let it show. Who didn't love throwing around a real creep the size of Shunsui for fun and sake profit?)
"Form a line, ducklings ♥!" Shunsui then called out happily and, once they'd arranged themselves, he gave them a formal sort of bow. "Welcome to the gymnasium ♥! We've talked a lot about peace and pacifism so far in this class, but we have not spent as much time covering a more defensive aspect of it, and we will be starting in on our more practical unit of this course ♥! Today, I would like to teach you about Aikido, a Japanese style of martial arts which combines defense with spiritual and religious beliefs ♥.
"Loosely translated, Aikido can mean 'the Way of unifying with life energy' or 'the Way of harmonious spirit' ♥. The whole concept behind Aikido is that a person may defend themselves against an attacker without actually harming the attacker in the process. One takes the motion of the attacker and redirects the force of it, rather than meeting it head-on; this does not even require much physical strength, because you are using the attacker's own strength and energy against them, with entering and turning movements ♥! Various joint locks and throws will complete the process ♥."
Shusnui smiled a bit there, tilting his head as he looked over the class. "Allow me to demonstrate, and to do give a very heartfelt appreciation for my lovely assistant for this class ♥! As you may have noticed, the simply radiant Detective Rosa-chan will be joining us ♥." He gestured with a bow her way; Rosa, arms still folded firmly in front of her, looked unimpressed and like she'd rather be literally anywhere else. "I know from working with her on this lesson in the past that Dectective Rosa-chan is as skilled as she is beautiful, and so she will make for an excellent counterpart to show you just how this works ♥. Now," Shunsui settled easily into a loose stance, "Dectective Rosa-chan, come at me with your fiercest attack, and please, do not be shy, my kuroi rōzu ♥!"
He definitely didn't need to tell her twise. Rosa chose what would have been a combination attack of two alternating hooks, an uppercut, and a nice solid knee to the groin (specially chosen just for him), but after Shunsui deftly avoided the first two punches, he executed a fewpotato quality moves that deflected and turned away each subsequent move on Rosa's part after that, without even losing his hat, until she was down on the mat.
Which Rosa was expecting, of course. She knew Aikido. But it was still annoying. Even though the whole thing looked effortless on both their parts, she found herself out of breath at the end, and trying not to show it.
"Like poetry in motion ♥!" Shunsui beamed once they'd stepped apart. "Now, to break it down for you all...." He nodded to Rosa to see if she was good to continue, and, using her as an example, he walked the students through the implemantations of Aikido.
"And now," he smiled again as he settled into another loose stance, "the reverse ♥. Detective Rosa-chan will now demonstrate, so you can see that, even though she is quite smaller than myself, she can also use the same moves effortlessly with the right application. It is not always a matter of the bigger combatant winning ♥."
Shunsui then rushed at Rosa with a great deal of energy (seemingly out of no where, considering his usual, lethargic disposition), trying his very best to not let her being a woman hold him back, although, if he was honest it certainly did, though perhaps less so once they got started and Rosa's significant competence was executed flawlessly. She went to the task of executing the movements herself, and now it was Shunsui who had his back to the mat....
Though he still kept his hat.
He chuckled, pushing himself back up to his feet. "Now, there are some criticisms for Aikido, as there are with many things. Some say the attacks done in practice or training are not entirely realistic. But it is also a spiritual thing, and some feel not enough emphasis is placed on that spiritual aspect, that it becomes too much about competition and defense. Some also wonder if something that involving throwing can really be considered nonviolent, but Aikido follows a philosophy of pacifism that does not look at pacifism as passive-ism, as the opposite of violence. Pacifism in this philosophy is the opposite of belligerence ♥. It is a philosophy that acknowledges that, yes, there are bad people in the world and to ignore that is dangerous. There are more shades to the spectrum than to just destroy something on one hand and just lying back and letting it destroy you on the other ♥. Aikido recognizes these other options in between and embraces them ♥.
"If hawks have always had that same nature, why should you pretend that mankind change theirs?'
"'Your duty is not to see that you get killed, but to take care that you don't.'"
Shunsui smiled again, bobbing his head in a nod. "So let us think about these things as I'll teach you a few more Aikido moves, and then I would like you to pair up and practice with each other ♥. If you'd like, you may also choose to work either myself or Detective Rosa-chan, whichever of us if the better match ♥. Remember, we are just diverting energy and the point is to avoiding harming the other person, even if they may intend to harm you ♥. Please ask any questions you may have, and allow me or Detective Rosa-chan to demonstrate more should you feel you need a bit more guidance on the moves ♥."

He threw in a playful wink, followed by a chuckle.
"I, too, am quite a bit stronger than I look ♥."
Which he preferred to keep on the downlow, sure, but if it helped Alara to have an opponent that she actually could throw around with her strength without sending them to the clinic, he'd be happy to help.
