"Now, as I'm sure the two of you already know," said Amaya, once it was time to get class going, "next week is your school trip, and I've been looking into it a little bit, and one of the places we'll be stopping is Paris, which is home to something called the Eiffel Tower, a massive structure developed by engineer Gustave Eiffel for a World's Fair in 1889 made of what's called puddle iron, which is an iron refined to remove to carbon, constructed in an impressively short amount of time, so, naturally, it's relevant to our interests."

Well, it was relative to hers, anyway.

And, with that, Amaya rolled out a chalkboard so she could start detailing for the students exactly what made the construction of this landmark so interesting, impressive, and, most of all, relevant to their interests, as well, at least in the context of this class.

"So," she said, as she reached the conclusion of the lesson, "today, you're going to recreate your own. I have instructions on how to make a smaller version of an Eiffel tower individually for you to practice and understand the construction, and then I'd like the two of you to try and create a larger version--not 300 meters large, of course--together. I've got a variety of different materials for you to work with, too, so it's up to you to decide how and what and we'll go from there.

"Any questions before we begin?"

Hear all about the Eiffel Tower and (most importantly) the intricacies of its design.

Amaya hasn't even seen the thing yet, and already, she's just a touch enamored.

Get some practice in following the instructions on some mini-popsicle or toothpick towers, and then get together to work on seeing if you can put together a larger one between the two of you!

Guillermo was definitely excited about trying to build a smaller version of the Eiffel Tower so he was trying to make some toothpick towers first to see how he went with following the instructions.

"So," asked Graham with a grin, "just how high do you think we can make it?"

Of course, considering that Graham was having difficulty getting even just the smaller versions to stay up, he should probably be focusing on getting that right first, buuuuuut....

“Do you think we could get it to reach the ceiling?” Guillermo asked with a grin as he looked up, wondering what it would like if they could build it that high.

"I did almost make a tower of choco-chip pancakes to the ceiling the other day!" Graham proudly reported, although he had felt a little sad that Guillermo had missed that. "How much harder could all this be?"

His eyes drifted upward.

"This ceiling's a bit higher than the one in the common room, though..."

“Oh I’m sorry I missed that,” Guillermo thought that sounded amazing, “I bet it looked awesome though,”

“Well we could probably aim pretty high still, even if we don’t quite make it to the ceiling,” Guillermo considered. “we can keep trying right?”

"I guess I'll just have to make some again sometime," said Graham, who knew he was going to do that anyway, probably, and that it was hardly a trial or anything like that for him. "And you're right! We can keep trying until we get there!

"Or," he amended, with a faint chuckle, "until class is over and Miss Amaya kicks us out."

“I’ll be there next time for sure,” Guillermo promised with a grin, “and I suppose we are limited to the length of the class,” he admitted. “we’ll just have to see how high we can build it in that time,”

It would take a very hunk of old metal to get Amaya particularly jazzed about this trip, wouldn't it?
