Political Campaigning (Thursday, April 20, 4th period)

Josh stopped his work on the Washington Post crossword puzzle as the class arrived. "Okay--last thing to talk about and then I'll let you break into groups and work on your final projects."

He pointed to the board where he had scrawled GOTV in huge letters. "Get out the vote," he said. "Because everything else you've done the rest of the campaign is absolutely pointless if they people you've convinced don't show up. By the time GOTV begins, you should know to the house where your voters live. You should know their names, if they need a babysitter for their kids to vote, if they need a ride to the polls. You should be able to print off a list of all of your voters and check them off as they go past your poll worker at their correct precincts. You should have absolutely nothing to do on Election Day but bug these people until your guy crosses their names off of the list. Call them. Knock on their doors. Do both at the same time. It's a fantastic system called 'knock and drag.' 'Have you voted yet? No? Let me give you a ride. Bring the kids, whatever.' Get. that. voter. to. the. polls."

Josh shrugged. "Otherwise it's game over. Every single vote counts--this has been made abundantly clear in recent years. The average winning Senate campaign raised and spent $6.5 million last cycle--it's stupid to waste that kind of money by not following through at the end."

"Call?" Parker would whap her with a pencil, but there are some things you just don't do, even if you're Parker. "Got a problem with this? Or do you want me to arrange to have the llamas stampede the voting booths?"

"If you think that's best."

Throwing a ball of paper at Call's head won't get her killed, though. Probably. "Okay, what's the problem? Spill. We are fast approaching the end of this project. Tell me what's up, so we can get you over it and get an A. All right?"

Callisto glared at the ball of paper as if she could wish it into sponaneous combustion. "Nothing's the problem, stampeding llamas is a great idea."

She might have been playing a little fast and loose with the truth there.

"Something has you pissed off. I don't think it's our project, because then you'd be suggesting assasination of our candidate." Parker looked around the room, then cocked an eyebrow. "Let me guess," she said, very dryly, watching Angel talk to Rory.

"What gives you the impression I'm pissed off. I'm not angry at Logan."

Whoops.

Parker's head whipped around, since that was not at all what she'd been about to guess. "Oh, God. What's he done now?"

"He hasn't done anything."

Blinking, Parker said slowly, "Okaaaaay." She looked from Callisto, to Logan, to Angel, then said, "Officially confused, over here. Anything I can do to fix the situation? Aside from whapping both of them because their presence makes you seethe?"

Callisto briefly considered explaining to Parker, but really, that would just lead to trauma all around. "Not really."

Parker studied her soberly for a moment, then grabbed a three or four notebooks, and set up a little fence of bookness and paper within Callisto's line of sight. "Now you don't have to look at them. And they can't look at you and know you want them to suffer pain and Montana. And we can finish getting our stupid candidate elected. With, or without, llamas." Pausing, she said, "I wonder if they'd be a good new growth industry on the reservations?"

"I think this semester has gone on too long."

Callisto might have tried staring through the paper fence. "Vote and get a free llama? There have been more gimicky ploys."
