Getting to Know Earth, Wednesday

"Good morning everybody," Hannibal greeted them cheerfully at Portalocity. "It's been brought to my attention that there is a wedding coming up, so today we are going shopping."

He led them through the portal and out onto a street. "It's back to Italy today. Milan instead of Florence. The Quadrilatero d'Oro, the Rectangle of Gold, is one of the premier places in the world to shop for clothing. There are shops for Prada, Gucci, Armani, Ferragamo, Dolce & Gabbana, and many others. Everyone is leaving here today with at least one new set of clothing. You can stay with me, and I will guide you through the stores, or you may explore on your own and put it on my bill. Perhaps stay away from Cartier and Rolex in that case, or at least ask me first." More because he had Opinions than because of concern about money. He trusted you not to buy anything over six figures.

He spread his arms. "I will be beginning in Armani. Enjoy your time."

Fashionably!

Wonder if you're even invited to the wedding. Then wonder if Hannibal cares. Wonder if he's doing this purely so Tahani will have to report on it.

The answers are he doesn't know, no, and not really but that's probably a bonus.

So many haute couture shops. So few actual price tags.

I want a sugar daddy. Not that I'd go shopping like this, but still.

Kurt was feeling totally out of his element. Other than the uniform he wore for training, he didn't own a lot of clothes and none were at all dressy. And he was honestly wondering if anything would actually fit or look good on him.

So it was with a great deal of uncertainty that he sought out some advice during the shopping adventure.

"Ummmm Dr. Lecter? I... I think I could use a little advice" he said with a small almost apologetic and embarrassed smile.

Libby's family was poor. Dirt poor. Single income on a highly specialized career poor. Squirrel stew poor.

To say she was a little bit out of her element right now was an understatement; she sort of felt like she was too poor to even be looking at these kinds of clothes, which meant she was just liable to gawk the whole time and, if they had to pick something, wind up with whatever happened to be close by at the time they were done.

"Quite a lot to take in isn't it?" Kurt said with a small smile as he walked up beside Libby, a bit of a wide-eyes look of his own going on as well.

"You could sure say that again," Libby muttered, shaking her head a little. "I can't believe what I thought I overheard someone paying for some of this stuff. For clothes! I must've heard wrong. Or maybe the money's just really different, so it seems a lot more than it is..."

"I hear ya. I spent most of my life wearing clothes my folks made for me. I mean..." Kurt gave a general wave at himself. "That was somewhat out of necessity but... yeah, I wouldn't even know where to start looking for clothes like these!"

Hannibal smiled at her. "The clerks can help if you're not sure what would be flattering on." And if anybody gave any of his students grief, he would eat them.

"Of course!" Hannibal beamed at him. "For a start, find something you like the look of and that is large on. You'll want to have it tailored regardless, and that will make it easier."

"Oh, no, sir," said Libby, shaking her head a little. "I'm not so worried about that. I'm not trying to impress anyone."

A fact she felt was pretty obvious with her long skirt and plain blouse, which seemed all the more drab and simple amongst all this.

And, even if she wasn't trying to impress anyone, she didn't want to embarrass herself, either, so she lowered her voice with this next part.

"And all of this is just so..."

Expensive. Frivilous. Unnecessary. Vain.

"...nice!"

"At this point," Libby admitted, giving Kurt a faint grin, with the wash of relief that came with someone else knowing just simple homespun clothes, although hers were more charity shops and hand-me-downs, "I'm tempted to just close my eyes, spin around, and go with the first piece I land on."

"We could do that... or, I could try and help you find something and you could help me find something," he said softly. "That way we both won't be fumbling around blindly through all of this."

"Ah, I think I can do that!" Kurt said feeling a little more confident with the proposition. "I'd have to get things fixed up anyways," he said with a grin nodding at his tail.

"Fashion doesn't have to be about impressing anybody," Hannibal said. "It can be that, but it can also be about having clothes that last, and that make you feel confident, or fancy. You could try a woman's suit, if you like. Or there are long skirts in interesting patterns and fabrics."

"I...guess we could do that," Libby agreed, feeling that now familiar heat rushing to her cheeks at the suggestion, her smile a little uncertain, but grateful. "And it's for a wedding, right? So finding you a nice suit shouldn't be very difficult at all."

"A suit?" Libby's eyebrows lifted a little. "You mean, with pants?"

Oh, Zo would absolutely die seeing her in a suit! And as tempting as that was to try, Libby felt an awkward blush rushing to her face.

"Oh, I don't really know....it doesn't really seem..." Appropriate was the word she was thinking, but she knew better than that, it was just that some things clung hard, "...my style..."

She honestly didn't know what her style even was, truth be told.

"Aye!" Kurt agreed with a grin. "And I'm sure there are plenty of nice dresses or skirt and blouses. We shouldn't have trouble finding something nice for you to wear!"

Josephine Jones

This was actually something quite familiar to Jo, her mother used to take her shopping in high end boutiques all the time.

She wasn’t used to picking clothes out by herself though and looked a little awkward as she looked around.

Hannibal nodded. "I know some very good tailors. No pun intended."

The pun was always intended.

"It's entirely up to you," Hannibal said. "Do you prefer only longer skirts, or would you be interested in something shorter?"

Hannibal smiled. "Now is your chance to get into this season's clothing. What do you enjoy wearing?"

"Ok! I'll let you know what I find," Kurt said with a nod and a grin. "Would you have a recommendation on what store to try first? Probably just going to go with a simple suite unless there is something else you would suggest?"

Kurt lowered his head a little as he added "I don't have a lot of experience shopping, especially out in public like this and definitely not for something this fancy."

"I would recommend a few minutes of window shopping first," Hannibal said. "See if you find a show that looks interesting. Everybody's style is different, but you should be able to tell what colors and shapes interest you."

He leaned in conspiratorially. "My husband had the same problem. His entire chest was on fire. Enjoy the opportunity. In this particular world, nobody will care you're different - they may see it as a challenge to find something that flatters you."

"Aye! I will find something just right" Kurt said with a nod and filled with confidence now. "Thank you, Dr. Lecter," he said with a slight nod and a grin.

"You're very welcome. I look forward to seeing what you find."

"Oh, no," Libby said quickly, with an emphasis. "I don't think I could do a shorter skirt. I...should stick with longer ones.....or pants."

She'd been more comfortable with jeans over the summer, so it wouldn't be that big of a step into unheard of territory like shorter skirts would be.

Libby had to admit, a few things had caught her eyes, but she felt tentative, almost dismissive about them, finding it difficult to see herself actually wearing any of this at all.

She caught her lower lip under her teeth for a moment before asking, "Any thoughts on color? Maybe that could be a good place to start."

Hannibal nodded, then led her over to the Armani shop. "What about something like this? If you don't like it, why not? Let's discover what you like."

Kurt thought for a moment before shyly offering up a suggestion.

"I think blues and greens look... look nice on you," he said his voice going a little softer. "But something with some yellow or something nice and bright would look good too I think."

Kurt wanted to tell Libby that he thought anything would look good on her and that any color suited her. But he was too embarrassed as it is to even consider saying that out loud. No matter how much he wanted to tell her.

It was a bit later when Kurt turned up again with a small grin.

"I think I found something I like ... though I have no idea what colors work best for blue fur," he said with a laugh.

Alara Kitan

Alara was definitely looking a little lost as she looked around, she had no idea about 21st Century Earth fashion at all.

“I like wearing dresses,” Jo told him, “or long skirts and blouses, I don’t like revealing a lot of skin,” she admitted.

Hannibal looked from the outfit to Kurt thoughtfully. "I would suggest something brighter, perhaps in a red or yellow, with black. Green or blue runs the risk of clashing. A brighter purple might even work."

Hannibal smiled sympathetically. "Did you have anything in mind yet? What do more formal clothes on your world look like?"

You were in good company in this class, Jo.

Hannibal nodded. "Are there colors or cuts you prefer?"

“There’s do many choices,” Alara admitted, “we tend to wear very long dresses,” not that she’d been to many formal events in Xelaya, “even though most of the formal events there are academic functions,” she added.

“I do like pastels,” Jo considered with a tilt of her head, “oh and red and gold, I do like those colours, I -“ she had to stop herself from talking about her bedroom and bathroom were done up in those colours, “I - I don’t really know anything about cuts, my mother picked out my clothes for me to try on,” she admitted
