Introduction to Archaeology, 5th Period

Daniel's standing at the front of the classroom, craddling his coffee and trying not to yawn too much. He has projecters and other stuff you theoretically might need (but probably won't) for your in-class presentations.

"Okay, guys, present to me," he says with as much enthusiasm as he can muster.

"Daniel, I know you didn't grow up on another planet! How could you not know this???" Sam took a fossil off his desk and began gesturing furiously with it as she shouted at him. "It's a dance. For high school students. Ours is tomorrow, and Janet's going alone and under duress."

She stopped in place and leveled a Look at him. "Or, wait, maybe she's not going alone...I think she and Elizabeth might be going together..." Yes, it was dirty pool, but Daniel needed to wake up if he wanted to keep Janet.

Daniel just gaped. "It is?" He winced. "Damn it, Sam, I didn't know. I completely missed it."

He blushed and gaped slightly at her.

Sam wasn't moved, and stood there with her hands on her hips, glaring at him. "Fix it, Daniel. I'm tired of having to drag Janet places because you forget and she doesn't want to go without you."

"But it's a school function, so it's not as if I can actually go with her with her," Daniel protested, looking fearful under Sam's glare.

"So chaperone, and we've got a plan so you can dance with her," Sam argued. "Did you think we were going to make you moon over her all night? Although I should. I really should."

Daniel gulped. Despite teaching, he feared large gatherings of teenagers. Especially large gatherings of teenagers in the presence of alcohol. "Well, I don't know. I thought it's always better to be safe rather than sorry, so I don't end up in prison for statutory rape," he said.

"It's one damn dance, Daniel! Be an adult!"

"That's the issue! I'm an adult and she's not!"

"She is an adult!" Sam shouted back, "She just doesn't look like it at the moment. And she misses you and she feels left out, but she doesn't want to say anything. Do you think this is a picnic, being this way? I'm going to a dance with a seventeen year old because I'm not allowed to date an adult. At least you understand it!"

"Or don't you? Is that the problem? Because I can definitely explain it, if you're having difficulties, Doctor."

Daniel sunk down in his chair, and buried his head in his hands. "I'm sorry, Sam. I keep screwing up. I don't know how to do this. I don't know how not to screw it up. She's the best thing that's ever happened to me, and I still don't know how to deal with things like this."

Sam resisted the urge to throw the artifact at him. "So do better! You love her, she loves you, how complicated can this be? Just think of her occasionally and ask your friends for help if you need it."

"It just gets complicated. I don't know," Daniel sighed. "I do think of her. I had no idea this prom-thing was even on!"

Sam placed the artifact back on the desk. "I'm leaving now, Daniel. But you need to decide--is it more important to you to have Janet, or to do whatever it is that you're doing that makes you forget her?"

She walked out.
