Intro to Palaeontology - Thursday, 1st Period

It had been a while since Cutter had actually taught a class and in what was perhaps a first he had actually turned up to the first class of a new semester.

“This is Introduction to Palaeontology,” Cutter began as he placed the cage he was holding on the desk, “I’m Professor Cutter and this little guy is Rex*” Cutter said fondly as he let Rex out of his cage and Rex hopped happily onto his desk and began chirping, “he’s a Coelurosauravus from the Permian period,” he paused as he surveyed his class and Rex chirped happily as he looked around the room, “this is actually a good learning point to talking about the Permian period, which is a good example of a mass extinction event.” he explained, “We will be learning more about mass extinction events later on in the semester but the Permian is the largest mass extinction event in Earth’s history …. "

Rex chose that moment to take off and fly around the class, luckily the windows and doors weren’t opened or Cutter was going to have to explain to Connor how he had managed to lose Rex on the first day of classes.

“Rex does that, don’t worry he's pretty harmless,” Cutter said and nodded to the first student, “so name, class and any previous experience with palaeontology or something that you would like to learn throughout the course this semester,”

Kurt was a bit distracted as he watched Rex fly around the room. But then he realized Professor Cutter was talking.

"Hi, I'm Kurt Wagner and I am a freshman here at Fandom" he said, that German accent coming out more than usual as he was still mostly distracted watching Rex with a grin on his face. "I've always loved dinosaurs and creatures like Rex, so I had to sign up for this class!"

Oh look at that Kurt there was almost a smile there, Cutter was definitely reminded of Connor’s enthusiasm for dinosaurs and creatures there, “you’re in the right place then, we will be looking at an overview of the different eras and the dinosaurs and creatures that existed then, we might not get to cover all of them but you’ll definitely be learning about them in this class,” he added.

"Ano..." Sakaki started with uncertainty when it was her turn to go. "I'm Sakaki, I...I'm a senior, and I don't have any experience with paleontology. But I do like learning about animals..."

Even extinct ones.

Although she was realizing that learning about extinct ones was going to be quite the emotionally taxing journey for her...

Maybe if she just focused on Rex the whole time, it would be fine?

“We will definitely be learning about the animals that have existed in different eras,” Cutter told her, “not just dinosaurs either, since Rex here predates most of the common dinosaurs that we will be covering this semester,” he nodded in Rex’s direction who was happily flying around the room.

"I'm Josephine Jones, I go by Jo and I’m a sophomore," Jo explained as she looked at Rex, feeling a little nervous as he flew close to her.

She knew Professor Cutter had said he was harmless but she had definitely never seen a creature like Rex before.

"I've never studied palaeontology before," Jo admitted, "but it seemed interesting and I would like to learn more about dinosaurs," she settled on.

"My name's Terra, I'm a sophomore, and my world never had any dinosaurs, but I thought they sounded interesting, so here I am."

“You don’t have dinosaurs on your world?” Cutter was intrigued and definitely starting to get an idea now of what his class next week should be the focus on, “they will definitely be a major topic that will be covered in this class,” he told her.

"Beta, junior," she said, having more or less figured out how to get this part over with most efficiently by now. She was mostly staring down at her hands, but she couldn't help looking at Rex with a tiny fascinated smile every so often. "No experience with paleontology specifically, but you could say I have some personal experience with mass extinction events."

That didn't sound disturbing at all.

“Oh?” Cutter tilted his head thoughtfully at that since that was a new one for him, “I haven’t had an actual experience with a mass extinction event myself yet, only the dinosaurs and creatures that we’ve dealt with in the present time,”

He had no idea about his ex wife plans to try and cause a mass extinction event or how many times they’d be trying to stop her from carrying out one.

"I haven't directly," Beta clarified quickly. The woman she was cloned from had, but that wasn't enough to count. Neither was her link to Far Zenith, since NEMESIS had sent the Extinction Signal before she'd been created. "But I've done a lot -- a lot -- of intensive studies on a specific one from my world."

Plus, you know, prepping to stop the next impending one, but...

"I'm Gray," Gray said, "and I'm a sophomore. I don't have any experience with paleontology, I just like dinosaurs. I think they're cool."

Cutter did smile slightly at that, “no arguments there,” he said, “we will definitely be learning about the different dinosaurs and the eras they come from, we’ll begin to go into more depth about them next week,” he added.
