Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Despite the fact that this picnic was celebrating the new fall semester, it was still technically summer, and the weather was making that clear. It was sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was seasonably toasty.

With not a minute to spare, the food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

Watts, who was currently in the process of stuffing cookies and bits of sausage in his suit jacket pockets, rather than opt for a second plate, gave the unfamiliar face a sharp nod in greeting.

Watts's strategy was fine and all until you forgot and something went through the laundry.

Not that that had ever happened to Raiden. He never forgot food. Gray, on the other hand, was a menace.

Raiden gave Watts a sort of up-nod in response and said, "How's it going?" around the cookie dangling out of his mouth. So more like 'Ow'f if gawn?'

See, that was where wearing clothing that had to be dry cleaned was a benefit! Because whoever he sent it out to would check the pockets. And discover the half-crumbled cookies and dried sausage bits and the like. Delicious.

"Didn't catch that," he squinted at Raiden, attempting to decipher what he'd said.

Rather than put one of his plates down, Raiden somehow just...hands-free maneuvered it into his mouth, chewed, and swallowed. "How's it goin'?"

My, that was impressive.

"Well enough, I suppose," Watts said. Which was the truth in that things were better than they had been this morning. "You're new." This is why he was a detective.

Those were some keen investigative skills you had there, Watts. "Yeah, I just got into town yesterday!" Raiden said brightly. "Name's Raiden."

Surnames were for suckers.

Listen he'd had a very stressful morning dealing with the fallout of coming from a very homophobic time period.

"Detective Watts." Because he very much preferred being addressed by his surname. Or his title. "Is it- how are you finding it here, so far?" See! He could small talk! Like a normal person!

"Oh, it's great! Lots of food," Raiden said, gesturing toward the spread with one hand. And the plate in it. "And I didn't even have to cook it! Not that I mind cooking, of course. I love cooking." He just never wanted to put the work of feeding Gluttony on any of his brothers, so he rarely took a break from it.

"The food is absolutely a draw," Watts agreed. And then reached to pull a soft pretzel off of his pocketwatch chain and take a bite. Like you do.
carbsliftthespirit: (well huh)

That was a genius use for a watch chain and Raiden was a little mad he hadn't thought of it himself.

You know. Back when people wore pocket watches on the daily.

The pretzel wouldn't have lasted very long on his person, anyway.

"Detective Watts," Raiden said, because he wasn't sure when someone introduced themselves that way if it was more polite to use just their job title or their surname. "I am impressed."

"I- am not entirely sure what I've done to merit such a reaction, but- thank you?" Watts said.

"Your..." Raiden gestured. "Pretzel chain thingy."

Oooh, a pretzel would be so good right now. With mustard. And a beer.

"Ah! Yes. Well. Back home, working odd hours, stopping for a meal wasn't always possible," a possibility that might slightly horrify poor Raiden here, "so, I learned to improvise. Take a meal with me as it were. And it's just- habit, these days."

(Somewhere, Steven was facepalming at him for considering a pretzel a meal.)

Raiden was horrified, all right, for more than one reason. "A pretzel is not a meal!" he protested. "A pretzel is a light snack!"
pocketpretzels: (squint)

Oh, him too? Really?

"Better than nothing, particularly if I'm spending my time at a crime scene."

Didn't stop him from nibbling on any food that was at a crime scene, of course. Including at least one that had involved a poisoning. But that had been of the wine, not the canapés.

Raiden didn't judge. Those canapes had probably looked delicious.

He did judge other things. "You--you need more than just a pretzel if you're spending hours investigating crimes. You need...protein, and vegetables. At least cheese."

Pizza. You needed pizza, Watts.

"Bit difficult to fit anything more complicated than a pretzel on my watch chain," he pointed out.

He did not need literal pizza pockets, Raiden, c'mon.
