Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Despite the fact that this picnic was celebrating the new fall semester, it was still technically summer, and the weather was making that clear. It was sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was seasonably toasty.

With not a minute to spare, the food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

Oh, thank goodness, a friendly face.

Watts, a shade more hunched in on himself than usual, made a beeline for where Irene was sitting.

"Miss Adler," he greeted.

"Detective Watts," Irene greeted him, maybe a touch amused at his -- well, hunchiness. "Join me? I'm having a marvelous time making up stories about the new people."

The last time she'd done this, incidentally, Watts had been one of her favorite people to watch before introducing herself. Mr. Mismatched Patterns, and all.

He'd had a very distressing morning, the only reason he'd come out here at all was the free food.

But at that invitation he nodded, twirling down in to a seat across from Irene. Pulling a cookie out of his jacket pocket and taking a bite, he asked (after swallowing), "any particularly interesting ones?"
begmetwice: ([neu] hmm)

"I'm trying to decide if those two know each other already," Irene told him, giving that pocket-cookie an askance glance before just rolling with it, and nodding to the people in question. "Shirt Sadist and Ms. Shoulders, over there. D'you think the hammer is some sort of garden tool, maybe?"

So yeah, that would be Anakin and Jane. She even knew Anakin's name; she was just being cute about it.

"She's got a cape," Watts pointed out. "What sort of gardener wears a cape?"

"Off-duty gardener who wants to look smart," Irene proposed, as someone who was occasionally known to wear a cape. (Though she favored much less superhero-y designs, herself.) "Though that does beg the question of why she has the hammer if that's the case. Looks too heavy to be a practical sort of hammer."

Really, Irene knew someone who was something of a hammer expert and could ask her -- or Shoulders herself, of course -- but it was so much fun to speculate.

"Hm," Watts mused. "Perhaps it's for- swatting troublesome rodents."

He wasn't terribly good at this game. Sorry, Irene. Came part and parcel with being a terrible liar. But he'd happily listen to your fictions!

"Hope the squirrels are speedy, then," Irene said with an exaggerated wince. "And those funny little birds."

Porgs weren't quite rodents, but they were certainly sort of...verminesque, to Irene's delicate sensibilities.

Watts's eyes widened, a brief look of pleased surprise flashing across his face at Irene taking his attempt at a fiction and rolling with it.

"If nothing else, the squirrels are excellent at remaining unseen," he pointed out. The strange birds, though...
