Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Despite the fact that this picnic was celebrating the new fall semester, it was still technically summer, and the weather was making that clear. It was sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was seasonably toasty.

With not a minute to spare, the food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

"Umm kidding about what?" Kurt asked. This whole big sib thing wasn't getting off to the start he had hoped.

"Are... we, related or something?" Yeah obviously there was a strong resemblance but the how of that relatedness was what was important at that moment.

"What gave you that impression?" TJ snarked. "Look, I came here to not have Dad looking over my shoulder the whole time. How old are you, even?"

Sorry, Kurt. She'd get over it eventually.

"I'm 15" Kurt said a little indignantly. What, did she thing he was some idiot pre-teen or something? "And what do you mean, Dad?"

"Oh god, you're younger than me." He was a kid. And okay, it probably wasn't fair to hold who he was against him.

TJ piled some more desserts on her plate and turned back to face him, begrudgingly. "Nobody put you up to this?" she asked, eyes narrowed.

"Well, Dean Skywalker matches students up. But no... no one asked me to do this. I... I volunteered."

Kurt watched her a moment. The similarities were striking. There weren't many Mutants, even among the X-Men who looked like him.

"Wait... are we? I mean we're not...." Ok it was weird even trying to say this. "You aren't my..."

TJ gave a heavy sigh and rolled her eyes. "Hi, Dad. Nice to meet you."

Ok now it was Kurt's turn to look a little incredulous. He really had been expecting her to say sister or something.... But dad???

"Yeah nice one. Trying to shake off the new student nerves at my expense. Good one TJ."

He looked her a moment and then shook his head.

"No... no way. That... that cant be? I mean, I know there's multiverses and other realities and all that (he lived with the X-Men he knew the basics at least). But... that?"

"Yeah, congratulations." TJ sighed. "I came here to get away from you, you know. I mean," she went on, realizing how that sounded, "look, you...he...my dad is great, but I kind of didn't want to be 'Nightcrawler's daughter' my whole life. Now I'm his little sister. Great."

"Ah... right. No, that.. that makes sense" Kurt said softly. "It's nothing important though... the whole big sibling stuff. Just a silly thing the school does, really. Don't worry about it, you will be fine."

Kurt gave a small sigh and the best smile he could manage at that point.

"No little-big sibling to worry about, but I'll be around... if... if you need anything. I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding me, if you do," he added with a small wave and a nod as he tried to focus on the pile of food he was balancing on his plate.

Sorry TJ, bit of a shock for him too, and not at all how he pictured his first time as a big sibling going.

TJ groaned. "No, don't give me the eyes! That's not fair!" She grabbed one side of his plate to steady it. "Look, I'm sure you're...you're probably a great big sibling. Go you." She was not going to call home and explain to her dad that she'd made another version of him cry.

"What's the shpiel? Come on, I'm sure you've got one. Give it to me."

He wasn't going to cry! He wasnt a baby after all!

Kurt looked up meeting TJ's equally bright yellow eyes and gave a small smile.

"Just wanted to make sure you got settled in. See if you had any questions about the school or the island" he said with a small shrug. "Seems a lot of people aren't as accustomed to things as... well... as we are."

Kurt gave her a small sincere smile.

"Think you are the best prepared of all the new students, actually."

"I mean, not everybody can come from somewhere as cool as us," TJ answered. "Charlie seems good, though. She's got magic, too. So what do I need to know to get settled in here?"

"The dorms are really nice, and the classes are fun for the most part. They are a lot different than regular classes like back at the Academy. Like, last semester there was a class on making and decorating cupcakes and one about blacksmithing."

He gave a small smile, kind of embarrassed to admit this but if TJ was a Wagner then it was probably something they all shared.

"And they are pretty cool about attendance to. I mean go and don't skip for the sake of playing hooky. But they are pretty understanding if something comes up. And there's plenty of places to eat and hang out too so its really a nice place, for being such a small island and all."

"I can work with that," TJ decided. "The Academy?"

"Ah right. It's probably called something else for you" Kurt said. "The school where I and the other students go. At least, in my timeline. Professor X is Headmaster."

"Huh. Yeah, my dad never came to the US until he was older. And the school's just Xavier's, even though he's not there anymore."

"Interesting to see how things are different huh? I've been over here for a few years now and with the Professor for two years now. He... thought Fandom would be easier for me than the regular high school I was at last year."

"Is it?" TJ asked. Everyone so far had been cool, but you never knew.

"Much! Everyone's pretty much been really nice. And those who aren't..." he gave a small shrug. "It's more of a apathetic tolerance. Some people are bit grouch or easily annoyed. But compared to 'grab your pitchforks and run the Mutants out of town' bit.... I'd call it a big improvement" he said with a smile.

And a thought to Graham, Jo, and Guillermo and... Libby. And that sudden complexity of alternate timelines and what not coming front and center again. Probably best to not bring up crushes and everything... with a future alternate timeline daughter. Was already complicated enough as it was.

"But yeah. You shouldn't have any trouble making some good friends here!"

"Yeah, people seem cool." She hesitated. "Do we...I'm thinking maybe don't talk about our different...times or worlds or whatever...too much, right? Just in case."

You never knew what might cause problems.

"I think its kinda left up to whatever people feel comfortable sharing?" Kurt said after a moment's thought. "There's no hard rules or anything forbidding it. And I know some of the adults have shared things about their different times and realities. But yeah.... might be best to keep the details and specifics to ourselves. For now at least."

"Right." TJ nodded. "So, like, you don't want to know that you end up the X-Men's field leader?"

Yes, she was a troll.

"Oh! Well, I mean...." Kurt tried, and utterly failed, to keep that perked up grin off his face. "I wouldn't mind knowing some things.... I mean it's been a dream of mine to join the X-Men someday.... The Professor and Logan keep saying I will in time.... but, it is nice, ya know... hearing that at least in some version of realities.. it actually happens!"

Way to go TJ you trolled yourself right into a rambling semi spazzing Kurt.

Okay, that was actually kind of adorable. Crap.

"Anything else I need to know to get started?" Before she actually had to sit down and think about her dad being so stupidly young?

"As far as I know most powers work to an extent on the island... like I can teleport and all still... so any of your abilities (did she mention any?) should still work in some fashion."

Kurt thought for a moment.

"The Island is pretty much open to us students. I mean don't go wandering into people's homes or apartments" he clarified with a laugh. "But I think the only place we cant go is The Devil's Nest. They tend to chase out anyone who isn't 21+. Otherwise... explore and see what strikes your fancy!"
