Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Despite the fact that this picnic was celebrating the new fall semester, it was still technically summer, and the weather was making that clear. It was sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was seasonably toasty.

With not a minute to spare, the food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

"Food in the common rooms, pies at J.Gob - though honestly stop by my room if you want great free pies, okay, they're usually charmed, but I'll steer you clear of anything too crazy."

She listened intently. "Radio... And the squirrels..."

Charlie looked around and waved at a squirrel perched on a branch, "Make sure you mention how good the purple hair looks, if you would, squirrel friend."

She turned back to Graham. "This is turning out to be even more amazing and mind-bending than I'd thought. And I will definitely listen for you on Fridays."

Hearing Charlie speak so easily to the squirrel-friends definitely put a smile on Graham's face, although, admittedly, not nearly as big as one as her saying she'd listen on Fridays. That left him all but beaming at her, with his head starting to nod. "Oh, no," he assured her, "this place is great! It's even better than I thought it was going to be, and I already thought it was going to be incredible! It's only proven me right, and then some!

"But you make pies?" Of course he was going to still circle around to that. "I love pies! My friend Guillermo said he's going to make me some, probably for Friday, which is when we have our DnD game over at the ~Maaaaagpie Empooor~rium~! I work there! That's on Fridays, too. Fridays are a pretty big day for me, around here." He nodded with a certain sense of importance there. "But his pies aren't charmed. At least, I don't think they are, although I guess they would be, because he's pretty charming himself! But what kind of charms? Do they make you float? Can they turn you into a bird? Will they give you the power to turn invisible?? Are they made of FEAR???"

The slow progression of speed in which those questions tumbled out of him excitedly definitely warranted the excited extra use of punctuation and capital letters by the end.

"Oh, no, no, no, I don't amek pies. Nobody wants me making pies. I'm not allowed. I made a lemon meringue pie once and the grass still hasn't grown back - and don't even ask about the brownies." She shuddered. "I'm the cautionary tale, you see. But the Aunties and Aunts and my mother will be sending me pies. Lots of pies. Refrigerators filled with pies. My coin is in the refrigerator in my room now, so who knows what will be awaiting for me."

She smiled at Graham. "No birds or floating or invisibility," she said, "though those would be cool. Potentially charms of fear, if the Aunties are annoyed with you, but mostly they're things like, 'remember to wear clean underwear', or 'call your mother every day' or the ever popular, 'don't embarrass us, Charlotte Marie Gale!' and stuff like that."

"So they're more like little reminders," Graham noted, his head tilting with an amused, pleased sort of smile at that idea. "Like when my mother would tuck little notes into my pockets to find when I'm trying to dig out something else! I think pies are much better way to do it, though; they probably taste a lot better than a note!"

He said probably, though, in light of Charlie's description of her attempts at cooking.

"Oh, they're tasty, but when you just want to sit around in your jammies and have a piece of pie in front of the television and you instead are forced to get up and start a load of laundry two bites in because you didn't check for charms..." Charlie shook her head. "Ask first or you could be sorry."

Graham's nose wrinkled a little and his head bobbed in a sympathetic nod as if he'd ever experienced anything even remotely similar to that. "Yeah," he said. "I can see how that might be a bit of a hassle! I guess you'll just have to make sure you keep your possibly-charmed pies and your definitely-not-charmed pies clearly separated so you don't run into a nasty surprise!"

"Weeeeelllll," Charlie said, "There's always the chance that someone might accidentally stumble across a piece or two of charmed pie. If they really deserved it."

She grinned at him a little conspiratorially.

"Accidental---" And then Graham caught the grin. "Ohhhhhhhhhh."

He then nodded, firmly and knowingly, with a slightly more exaggerated than strictly necessary wink thrown in, too.

"Of course! Accidentally! Hopefully, people will be sure to proceed with caution around any particular pies of unknown origin, especially if they'd done anything particularly deserving."

"We might not want to tell them?" she suggested, bringing him into the conspiracy. "Not at first anyway. But I promise not to let you have any of the more charmed pies."

He was adorable! Charlie was going to be so happy here.

"Hmmm," said Graham, with a suspicious narrowing of his eyes at Charlie that threatened to be spoiled by the grin on his face; he lifted a finger to shake at her, as if to warn her that it would take a bit more than that to pull one over on him!

(It wouldn't, actually, not even a little).

"That sounds like something someone who'd want me to have a charmed pie would say! But I guess I'll have to just take your word for it."

(He would, absolutely and completely).

"It might just be," she admitted. But she wouldn't. He was just too marvelous. "So I guess you're going to have to decide how much you trust me."

He could trust her. A lot.

But this did not entirely rule out the occasional prank. Leopard and spots and all that.
