Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Despite the fact that this picnic was celebrating the new fall semester, it was still technically summer, and the weather was making that clear. It was sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was seasonably toasty.

With not a minute to spare, the food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

Marc ambled over when he spotted Liz in the crowd. "Hey."

“Hey,” Liz said very quietly, looking up at Marc as she tightly held onto her camera without realising just how tight she was holding it.

Well even Marc could pick up on these kinds of signs someone was not okay.

"What's wrong?"

At first Liz was going to deny that anything was wrong but it was Marc so she bit her lip before she answered.

“It’s …” she hesitated, “I haven’t been able to sleep the last couple of days …it’s …the next couple of weeks…” her voice trailed off, “they’re …” she bit her lip, “it’s the anniversaries,” she wasn’t ready to go in such detail but she knew Marc would at least have an idea of what anniversaries she was talking about.

"Well shit," Marc said, which for him was expressing sympathy. Likewise was his next comment of: "And you can't even drink."

Liz just nodded miserably, “I’m so tired,” she said in a soft voice, “the anniversaries aren’t even here yet and all I can do is think about how closer they’re getting, especially Pittsburgh …” she bit her lip, “it will be a year next Friday,”

"A year? Fuck." Marc hadn't realized it was so recent. Maybe at some point Liz had mentioned that to him or Steven but that's what happened when Marc wasn't great with details. Regardless, he could understand why it was bad for her. "That sucks. Got any plans for it?"

He was lacking immediate suggestions since his plan in her place would've been to get blindingly drunk.

“I …I guess try and keep busy,” Liz said quietly, “my focus hasn’t been good lately, I’m …” her voice trailed off, “I …I lately I just keep seeing the fire, waking up in that cell,” she shivered even though it was not cold at all.

"How's that been on your control?" Marc asked. There was no judgement, he just wanted to know if he needed to plan on helping out with potential danger.

“I…so far it’s been okay,” Liz told him softly, “I … I haven’t had any issues yet,”

"See? Tougher than you look," Marc said. Not that Liz ever looked weak, but he figured she'd appreciate the wording all the same. "If it changes you know to come find me, right?"

Marc wondered if maybe he should talk to Travis about that too. Fireproof plus firefighters might not be a bad thing to have ready.

Liz gave a tired smile at that, “it’s been hard but I haven’t had any more incidents but I will find you if it changes,” she promised softly, “especially since I don’t know if that will change as I get further along,”she admitted.

It definitely wouldn’t hurt to be on alert, especially in the next week but Liz did not know what Fandom had in store just yet.

Marc nodded to show he appreciated the promise. "All this week, huh? Any days in particular going to be shit for you?"

Since for Liz he'd actually bother to remember that kind of detail.

There was a pause, “and beginning of the following week,” she admitted, “my family …they died on the 6th of September, it’s been 14 years,” she said softly.

“Friday will be the worst one,” she said quietly “and Thursday I think,” she paused, “I …it can get pretty bad,” she knew Marc had seen her when she was at her worst but she thought it didn’t hurt to give him a heads up.

Marc made a note of all of that. "You work Tuesdays, right? Steven was going say hi. You want me instead?"

Marc knew Steven wouldn't mind that particular surprise ruined, since Steven had already asked Liz about bringing something to eat.

“I work Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, I’m probably going to try and get some work done on Monday as well,”Liz told him, “I ..I don’t think there’ll be much work happening closer to Friday,” she said softly.

Then to his last question, “I …I don’t mind, I’ll appreciate the company either way,” she told him.

"He'll stop by at lunch," Marc told her. Which she could probably guess since that's how those visits tended to happen on days when both of them worked, but Marc figured Liz could do without any uncertainty about next week where she could get it. "And we're around if you need us ~~though not as much on Thursday due to rl~~. Nothing planned that can't be interrupted."

Like a class Steven had signed up for on Wednesdays for some reason.

Liz gave a small tired smile, “thank you,” she said quietly, “it’s …beginning of September is always rough, last year I was still in custody for the anniversary of my family’s death …I …I remember that much from that time,” she admitted quietly, most of the week was a blur after Pittsburgh but some details she could still remember.

"Been there," Marc said, not without sympathy for the memory problems. "Are you doing anything for it? The anniversary?"

“I …I don’t know,” Liz said quietly, “I …hopefully I can get through this week without any episodes,” she said, “I don’t want to be in jail again,” she paused, “I used to go to church with Professor Broom, I mean I didn’t last year …maybe I’ll go to the church here,” she considered.

It was on the tip of Marc's tongue to ask if Liz wanted company when she did that. But he couldn't. If he couldn't do it for - yeah. No. It wasn't happening.

Luckily there was backup. "Steven can go with you if you want. Not our religion but if you don't want to be alone."

“I’d …I’d like that, even just being there after if Steven doesn’t want to go into the Church with me I …I’m not going to be very good company that day,”

Even though she knew she wasn’t being very good right now or for the next little while if she was being honest.

"I'll make sure he knows," Marc told her.

Hey, she was keeping him from having to deal with people he didn't know right now. As far as Marc was concerned that was great company.

“Thank you,” Liz said softly, “it, it means a lot to know I won’t be alone,” she told him.

"Yeah it does do that," Marc pointed out. He gave her a wry look, figuring she would understand why Marc and Steven of all people would know why it's better to not be alone.
