Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Despite the fact that this picnic was celebrating the new fall semester, it was still technically summer, and the weather was making that clear. It was sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was seasonably toasty.

With not a minute to spare, the food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

Eventually, very late into the picnic, really, Sakaki realized that she should probably stop playing with and fussing over Maya enough to get something to eat. And she was still in a delirious cat-induced happiness fog that she really couldn't be bothered to fix something for herself. Which made the picnic's existence pretty convenient, really, when you got right down to it.

Of course Maya had followed her down, trailing Sakaki like an adorable little shadow.

And of course he insisted on being held the moment she sat down at a table with some of her food, making her grateful that she'd mostly gotten things that could be easily eaten with one hand, while thinking, since they were out of the room, they'd better also swing over to the shelter once they were finished eating to pick up a few other supplies and whatnot.

"Cute cat," Charlie said with a smile.

And Sakaki just took a moment to look at the other girl with a small smile on her face, her eyes a little bit wide and pleased, because you know what? He was a cute cat, and he was hers, and he just let her hold him without scratching or biting and there was nary even a drop of blood as a result of her holding him, and it was really the most amazing thing in the world for her right now, so it was just kind of nice that someone noticed that, yes, he was cute, wasn't it?

"Thank you," she finally said, and looked down at the cat looking very comfortable snuggled up into Sakaki's chest, which, considering how ample it was, shouldn't be too much of a surprise. "His name is Maya."

And Maya was getting an extra little scritch on the top of his head right now, just for existing.

"Awww," Charlie said. "Hey Maya, you're adorable."

She smiled at the other girl. "It's clear how much he loves you."

The color that spread across Sakaki's face at that was a very complicated shade of red, one of pleasure and happiness over that fact, but also a certain bewilderment and marvel that it could be a thing, because a statement like that tapped into a rather complicated thing indeed.

And it only blazed more once Maya seemed to prove it especially by letting out a meow, almost in agreement, and started to purr so loud, it could have been deafening.

And Sakaki almost didn't even know what to say. Or if she could even speak anymore, so overwhelmed by the cuteness.

"He...he's a very special cat," she finally managed to get out.

"See? It's as if he understood what I was saying and agreed," Charlie pointed out. She wasn't sure why the girl was so blushy, but it was awfully cute.

"Oh, he's very smart," Sakaki said, suddenly very emphatic, as if it was important that Charlie understood just how true Maya's specialness was. "He traveled all the way from Okinawa to Tokyo all by himself just to find me!"

And saying it out loud right now was enough to almost make her well up on the verge of tears.

Maya made her very emotional, and Sakaki had no clue how to handle that, especially around strangers.

"So... a magical cat?" Charlie asked curiously. "That's amazing!"

"I....guess he could be magical," Sakaki realized, slowly, blinking before her head tilted at the concept. "I never really thought of it that way."

To her credit, she'd only even known Maya for a few days. But now, with this perspective, she pulled back a little bit so that she could take a closer look at him.

And Maya with his adorable little face just looked right back up at her and let out the most adorable little meow.

And Sakaki was going to need a moment, because she was slingshotted into an entirely different dimension of absolute cute overload. It was all too precious to handle, she was not even going to survive, and that would be a death she would happily succumb to.

Charlie wasn't even necessarily a cat person. She might be, but she'd never really thought about it. "Oh my gosh, just look at him," she cooed. "You are so lucky!"
