Cupcakes, Friday 8/19, 2nd period

As he had been nearly every week previously, Stark was standing at the front of the room when everyone arrived for cupcake class.

“It’s our last class today,” he said, looking around. “I hope you’ve enjoyed it. Odd ingredients and all.” He didn’t need to know if anyone enjoyed the odd ingredients more than the planned ones. “I did.” Maybe not when the boxes involved seafood. That was just upsetting.

“We’ve nearly run out of colors, so today’s ingredients will be black. There aren’t many in here.” Or so Stark foolishly thought as he patted the box in front of him. If he’d picked it up he would have noticed it was clearly much heavier than it ought to be. He ought to know better by now.

“I have black licorice to start. I like it. Not everyone does. But it’s candy and it’s black so it works well for this, I think. Then there’s blackstrap molasses. I also have blackberries and black currants if you’d like to use fruit.”

This was going well so far and Stark relaxed a little before reaching into the box once more for another ingredient. “There’s black coffee which goes very well with chocolate, like black cocoa. And I have Oreos. Cookies are always good. I also have black tea which I think ought to work but I’m not entirely sure. I think I only put the coffee in. Not tea. Maybe,” he started to say, feeling foolishly hopeful for a brief, shining moment, “maybe this is all…oh no. It’s not.”

Stark sighed and started pulling out a few more things. “We have black sesame seeds. That’s not terrible. I’ve had good cookies with those. There’s also black pepper which maybe shouldn’t go in cupcakes but it isn’t too bad an ingredient.”

Stark’s face fell as he peered into the box once again. “Now there are black beans. And there are black olives. Why are there so many olives? Olives don’t go in cupcakes.” Lots of things didn’t go in cupcakes. So many things. More things that had yet to be removed from the box, in fact.

“And now black...garlic?” One student was getting a betrayed sort of look right now.

“Oh dear. And we have…activated charcoal? That isn’t even food. We have that in the clinic.” Stark’s face now was the very picture of dismay. It was only going to get worse with the final item. “And squid ink. I…why?”

What had he ever done to deserve these things in his cupcake ingredients?

“If anyone wants help I can help. If you like.”

Fair warning: he might cry if anyone asked him to help with most of the later ingredients. Or if anyone had brought the non-pasty beaver tails in from Summer’s class.

"Wait...where did the littler box with the holes come from? NO, we are not putting a chicken in anything!"

Guillermo was quite excited to be working with his favourite colour for this class and he decided to use liquorice, coffee and cocoa in his cupcakes.

“I think it’s a bit of both,” Guillermo considered, “even though I do quite like how it tastes,”

Ohhh, Summer (who had done a very fine job of looking innocent and blameless the whole time Stark was revealing the ingredients, because they really weren't her fault, okay?) was now looking like Christmas had come early with these ones, and you'd better believe she was off-roading it with her own hellish creations that could best utilize the black beans, the black olives, and the black garlic.

It was going to be a monstrosity, and it would be glorious.

No one should be this excited to try to make buttercream black bean frosting, and yet here we were, folks. Here. We. Were.

There was a thing called restraint, you know.

Not that you'd know it by the look on Summer's face as she met that statement with a bright, pleased, almost contented sort of grin that had no business belonging someone garnishing a cupcake with garlic.

"You really should have," she agreed, happily.

Yeah, Amaya was going straight for the coffee on this one.

And maybe giving an attempt with the tea, too, for some old times sake, really thinking it was a shame that Seivarden wasn't here to act more disgusted about tea in cupcakes than charcoal or chicken.

"If the coffee does," Amaya pointed out, "I can't imagine the tea wouldn't, but I guess we'll find out."

And now Amaya was wondering if she could use this potential knowledge to her advantage sometime next week. Bad cupcakes seemed like a very likely and acceptable excuse to get out of shopping, right? Too bad the timing didn't work out that she could use whatever it was Summer was making right now to that effect....

It was blackberries, black cocoa, and black tea for Nell.

"A little sweetened yes week give it a lovely flavor," Nell assured him. "You can try it when it's done."

Kurt was going with a take on a recipe he had learned from his folks. So he had some black tea and blackberries to use for the cupcakes. For the icing he was going with a simple vanilla and tea glaze.

If he had time for something a bit more traditional as a second batch, Kurt had some chocolates, coffee, and currants set aside as well.

Travis was considering seeing if the chicken maybe wanted some black sesame seeds.

Just as soon as he looked up whether sesame seeds were edible for chickens.

Per the internet, sesame seeds were a bit fatty and not appropriate as the only thing you feed a chicken, but they weren’t toxic to them or anything. So Travis clicked his tongue to try to get the chicken’s attention, then sprinkled some on the table for it.
