Cuisines of Earth, Tuesday

Class today had been informed to meet not at Portalocity, but at Hannibal's house. He greeted them all in the foyer before leading them into the dining room, which was more than large enough for them all and decorated in dark blue and red with plants - herbs - in a tower by the doorway.

"I thought today we would stay close to home and eat a meal I can truly vouch for," he said, smiling. Once they sat, he would bring out water, homemade soda, or wine, and then the menu:

Gougeres
Strawberry bruschetta
Lamb chops with balsamic reduction
Gnocchi with sage butter sauce
Cauliflower pomegranate apple salad
Roasted summer vegetables

And then to follow, excellent coffee or tea and:
Elderflower, champagne, and berry jellies (Sorry, Summer)
Chocolate liqueur souffles

If you left hungry, it wasn't his fault. He might even send you home with food.

I mean, it's Hannibal's home. Most of you haven't been there before.

Of particular interest: the wedding pictures in the foyer, including a shot of Wolverine crashed into the middle of a wedding cake; the music room, which includes a harpsichord and theremin; and if you wander off, there's a games room in the basement with billiards and darts.

Nell was completely awed by the house. She all but tiptoed as she walked, hands clasped behind her so she didn't accidentally touch anything.

Except the herbs. She gently touched the leaves and the soil, nodding when she saw how well cared for they were.

And then was a little embarrassed that she'd been teaching Liz about plants when clearly Hannibal was more than capable.

To be fair, Hannibal knew herbs very well; anything non-edible, he was left with researching and hoping.

"Are there any that you're missing?" he asked Nell, smiling. "You're welcome to take clippings if you like."

"I don't think I have this type of thyme," she said. "And is this galangal? I had some to grow, but it didn't do well."

"It is," Hannibal said. "You're welcome to both, and would probably know better than I how to split them. Feel free to take what you'd like, and let me know what you need to get them home safely."

"If you have some wet paper towel to wrap around the roots and a plastic bag to put them in I can do that easily," Nell said. "And thank you. These will be wonderful to have!"

"You're very welcome. I'll get the paper towel and plastic bag after our meal," Hannibal said.

Nell beamed at him. "That would be marvelous. Thank you so much. And I can't wait to taste all of your food."

Usually, Libby was all explorative wide-eyes for wherever this class went, but it seemed a bit rude to do that when it was someone's house, so she was discretely keeping her attention to herself until they got to the actual food.

Kurt had seen a few of the pictures before... but the one of Wolverine. That one had him fighting back a laugh.

"Seems like Logan gets into trouble no matter what reality or universe he is in" Kurt said shaking his head.

Though now, it had him feeling slightly homesick, and thinking again about making a quick trip back to see everyone before classes started up again.

"I should think that would be a constant, yes," Hannibal answered, amused.

Nell wanted to try everything! And figure out the ingredients and spices he'd used in the dishes.

Even if Libby hadn't wanted to try everything, she still would have, because that also felt a bit rude not to.

Except for the lamb chop. Even if it might be rude to skip it, try as she might, she just couldn't bring herself to eat any of that dish, in light of recent events...

Fortunately, Hannibal wasn't going to press anybody into eating anything they didn't feel like. Though it did take him a minute to put together past radio broadcasts and realize why Libby might not want to. (After all, it wasn't as if he had a problem with eating his own species.)

"Ah, I probably should have chosen a different meat," he noted. "My apologies."

"Oh, no," Libby said, a little hastily and a little (ha) sheepishly, with a small shake of her head. "It's alright. It just feels...a little awkward, is all. I'm sure it's delicious, though. I just...think I might pass on it today, thank you."

"By all means," Hannibal said with a nod. "I make sure to include a vegetarian entree for just that reason."

Because some people were weird about meat.

Kurt sat down with a big grin and plate full of food, not piled quite as high as he might have... he didn't want to be rude or anything.

After spending part of her morning working at the forge, Liz was definitely feeling hungry now and she was trying to eat as much as she could, this time she was feeling a lot more confident in what she could or couldn’t eat.

Guillermo always enjoyed eating and was definitely eating as much of everything as he could.

Everything looked incredible and it was food that Jo was more familiar with, so she was helping herself to generous amounts of everything.

Some of the food Alara still wasn’t familiar with but she was still curious to try and see what it was like, so she was trying smaller amounts of everything.

He's here! He's not going anywhere. You can even stay late and hang out, if you like.

I wish I had an adequate kitchen. I mean, I still wouldn't be able to make most of these, because I have a day job, but still.
