"Welcome, everybody," Hannibal said, giving a little bow as he greeted them today. "Today we will be visiting Tempura Kondo in Japan. It's a decorated restaurant, and one of the hardest to book in the country, but we have reservations.

"Tempura is, simply put, fried food, but very different from American fast food. You'll find quite a bit of seafood here as well as vegetables, provided in different meals that will include plenty of each, and the sweet potato is a specialty of the restaurant."

He led them through the portal and into a high-end shopping area. "The local language is Japanese, which I speak, and many will also speak at least some English. And if you would like to explore Ginza after the meal, again, please do not get lost."

Or he'd put you all on leashes.

It's dinner time now.

The chef has over fifty years of award-winning experience, so he'd better be good at it by now.

Ohhhh, Libby was so glad to have turned back in time to make it to this class this week and gawk at the new places and new food to try, which she would be doing in abundance. Japan! Amazing! And she was trying to pay close attention to things she might ask Sakaki about later, since she knew she was from here, or maybe Gray, since he said he'd lived here for a while, too!

It was fun seeing a different take on fried foods, too.

"Have you had Japanese food before?" Hannibal asked. He thought it unlikely, but you never knew.

"Oh, no," said Libby, with a shake of her head and an excited sort of grin. "Never. Although I have had a lot of these vegetables before, just never like this before!"

"I hope you enjoy them," Hannibal said. "Sometimes familiar ingredients cooked in a new way can be particularly interesting."

Liz had a look over the food, a little hesitant about what she could try.

"Everything here should be safe," Hannibal offered. He'd partially chosen tempura over sushi for just that reason.

Liz nodded, “I wasn’t sure if it was anything like sushi,” she admitted, agreeing with the narrative, “I know that’s something I can’t eat,”

Hannibal nodded. "Sushi is a problem because it's raw, so we're avoiding it. Tempura should be fine."

Liz considered which one to try first and then decided to go with the sweet potato first, "it can sometimes be overwhelming to remember everything I'm not supposed to eat," she admitted.

"I can imagine." Hannibal smiled. "As human knowledge has progressed, that list has become ever longer. But remember that most of it is advice, rather than rules. Avoid raw fish because of potential infections, but should you forget and eat a piece, it's unlikely to harm you. You're eliminating potential risks, not avoiding poisons."

Liz nodded as she listened, “I do want to try and be careful,” she said softly, “I - I don’t want something that I do to harm my daughter, I’m scared of making a mistake,” she admitted.

Jo had never tried anything like this before so she was looking rather curiously at the dishes as she tried to decide what she wanted to try.

"Fortunately this sort of meal makes it easy to try a little of everything," Hannibal pointed out.

Guillermo was trying everything and was eating as much of the different dishes as he could. Food was definitely an excellent distraction from the last week, even though his talk with Kurt the other day had helped a lot as well.

Alara was still feeling a bit unsettled from science class and was taking the opportunity to try a bit of everything to get a taste for the different dishes.

Nell was delighted to try the different types of tempura. They were all so delicious!
