Greek & Roman Archaeology

Today's lesson is on funerary practices. I want you to pair off with a partner and list the commeon funerary practices of the Greeks and Romans and then compose a short essay explaining the similarities and differences between them.

Linguistics

I hope you all studied Egyptian Hieroglyphs. No, I'm not going to quiz you on them, but I thought it would be nice to be familiar with them.

Now, in order to understand the grammar of another language, it helps to know the grammar of one's own native language, first, as it often applies to other languages.

Define the following terms as they pertain to your native language: Noun, Verb, Direct Object, Indirect Object, Tense, Mood, Voice, Syntax, Diction, Subjunctive, Imperfect

Thomasina makes sure to arrive at Professor Jackson's classroom on time, so that she can speak to him about adding his Greek and Roman Archaeology course to her timetable. She walks up to his desk and having decided to not stand around waiting to be noticed, attempts to get his attention.

Professor Jackson? I was told I needed to speak to you about adding your Greek and Roman Archaeology course?

[OOC: Livejournal is evil like that >.o]

Yes? All right, I'll add you to the roster. We haven't done too much, so I would suggest asking a fellow classmate for his or her notes to catch up.

[OOC: So it is . . . anyway.]

Thank you, sir. I'll do that.

She then turns from the desk and goes to take a seat amongst the other students.

[OOC: My character never signed up for this class, just noticed it investigating the tags. She's in E. Archeology.]

Beka slides into her seat looking exhausted but with an incandescently sweet smile on her face. She has coffee, but only for her. In fact, if there's anyone else in the room, including Dr. Jackson, she's entirely unaware of them. She stares out the window. Remembering.

[OOC: Beka's mun noticed class came up. Beka's mun is beat with stick tired and in different time zone than teacher. Beka's mun is going back to sleep now, but will turn in homework when she waits. Anyone wanting to mock Beka does so at their own risk, and with the full knowledge that when Beka's mun wakes, it's likely Beka may hunt you down like the dog that you are, and yes, I'm talking to you Mr. Sheppard. *g*]

Phoebe comes in, looking a bit down and slides into her seat.

Thomasina turns to the girl sitting some ways off to the left.

I don't believe we've been introduced, though you're taking Geology, as well, aren't you? I'm called Thomasina.

Phoebe smiles. "Yes, I'm taking Geology as well. I'm Phoebe."

Do you want to partner for this? Or did you already have someone else in mind?

Sure, that'd be great.

Oh, good. When I saw that we had to do this in pairs and looked around and realised I'd never talked to anybody in this class, well . . .

I'm glad you talked to me. I only know a few people here.

Well, I had two options: talk to you or talk to that girl over by the window who doesn't look like she wants to talk to anybody. And you looked pleasant and approachable.

*Phoebe beams* I take that as a compliment.

[OOC: That was actually a bit more blunt than Thomasina normally is, but it's Stoppard for Ghu's sake and there's only so much I can do in the way of making ordinary conversation sound like intellectual juggling. Anyway, yeah. Back to our regularly scheduled in-class chit-chat. 8)]

I certainly meant it as one. I realised after I spoke that I might've sounded as though I thought you were the lesser of two evils, but, really, you do seem very nice.

I suppose we're meant to be working on the assignment, though nobody else ever seems to.

*Phoebe grins*

That's quite alright. I understood what you meant.

No one ever seems to do work in here, but I try.

I'm glad, then. Shall we try to do work now, together? Do you know anything about Roman funerary practices?

I know they were very big on speeches and songs over the deceased.

They had a procession. To the grave - or the pyre - and professional mourners were hired to take part in it. And entertainers, too - dancers and musicians.

It was more of a celebration of their life than a mouring for the dead.

Thomasina slips into an empty chair, placing her exercise book and pen and inkpot on the desk in front of her. She reads the assignment that has been written on the chalkboard and tries to remember whether Septimus ever mentioned Roman funerary practices in their lessons.

Duce takes her seat in class, and frowns slightly as she hears that a partner is required. Switching schools mid-term is a bitch. Looking around the room, she tries to find someone who hasn't already paired up.

Finding a random NPC student, Duce pairs up and hands in their homework, a decent essay on various funerary practices through history.

*arrives in class and begins taking notes*

Sonia comes in, looking a bit tired, and finds a seat near the window. She scans the classroom in the hopes that she'll recognize somebody.

As usual, Evelyn shows up and is always looking busy. She is taking copious notes and watching the class.

[OOC: I forgot Tyrol was in this class. I'm playing more than one character and I keep confusing myself. ;)]

[OOC: LOL no problem, I'm playing 2 students and I think they missed half their classes already >.o]

*DEATH walks in, looky vaugely annoyed, and hands a note to the teacher, even though he is not scheduled for class today. Since the professor cannot see Death, the note just seems to materialize.*

It reads:

To those it may concern, DEATH was unable to attend class on Weds as a result of an unscheduled plauge. I, the Death of Rats, was unprepared for such an event since, generally, all plauges must be cleared with DEATH beforehand. However, several lesser demons have decided to make light of the fact that DEATH is on sabbatical and have failed to follow procedure. They have been sent to work with the Hogfather for the next week as pennance.

Beka glumly hands in homework late. Not her favorite thing to do. "Sorry, Doctor Jackson. It's been a really long week."
