Cupcakes, Friday 7/15, 2nd Period

Once again, cupcake class was meeting in the home ec room. Once again, Stark was waiting at the front of the room. Once again, there was a box sitting on the counter that the teacher was eyeing warily. Maybe it would be a perfectly normal box of ingredients like last week. Maybe that was just wishful thinking.

“Welcome back,” he said, looking around the room. “Today I’ve brought red ingredients for red cupcakes. Or pink ones, since sometimes the red turns pink when it’s mixed in. But it starts out as red and that counts. So…” he let his voice trail off as he looked to the box. “I suppose it’s best just to open this up and see what there is inside. I know what’s meant to be there but that doesn’t always mean anything around here.”

He took a deep breath and opened the box to start taking out ingredients. “I have Swedish Fish which are candy fish and the only acceptable sort of fish to put in a dessert.” Arguments could be possibly be made for pretzel goldfish crackers but not right now. “There are cinnamon candies as well. And I have raspberries and strawberries and cherries.” This was going well enough so far, and Stark was almost optimistic about the rest of the contents of the box. “More cherries, the kind from a jar, and some watermelon, and cranberries.”

“And, unfortunately, we have beets. And more beets. And we have tomato juice and cayenne pepper. And then there are more spicy peppers. Sometimes chocolate and spicy can go well together but these seem…too much. And look, there’s a bottle of hot sauce. Why is there hot sauce?” Stark asked nobody in particular. Not even Summer. He knew there wasn’t an answer.

“Is that everythi-oh no. It’s not everything. There’s also cough syrup. At least,” he said with a sigh as he picked up the box and tipped it over just to be certain, “that’s the end. And there wasn't any seafood.” Certainly not any fermented seafood, Summer.

“So. We have plenty of ingredients to choose from. Please don’t use the medicine.” Summer.

Given nothing untoward had happened last week, Vi was being slightly more adventurous this week.

This mostly involved 'sampling' the various fruits, because she was never going to be over just how available it was.

There may not have been fermented fish sauce, but there was also no other kinds of meat, either, so Summer was just incredibly disappointed right now.

Also, she was totally going to play it 'safe' with all the spicy ingredients, but then someone had to go and explicitly say not to use the cough syrup, so guess who was going immediately for that cough syrup.

What? Some people just wanted to watch the world burn. Or at least just have glowy aliens pout at them ~~adorably~~ adorably.

The internet had not yielded any lobster cupcake recipes!

"Summer." Stark was not pouting. Except how he totally was. "Are you going to eat those when you're finished?"

When did Summer ever actually eat the monstrosities she brought into this world?

"....are you?" she asked, after a moment. Maybe a moment in which she attempted to sound somewhat innocent.

"Do you want me to?"

Careful, Summer. You know he would if you asked nicely.

Oh, yes. She knew.

"No," Summer assured him. "I don't."

But was that going to change her mind about making them anyway? Probably not.

"Good," Stark said. He was looking very relieved. "Who is going to eat them?"

Summer shrugged. "I don't know," she admitted. "But Steeeeve'll eat almost anything."

Him happily drinking vinegar water like it was a refreshing lemonade was going to stick with her for a while, probably.

"Goose, too."

She still hadn't grossed that one out yet; it was a little disturbing, honestly. She'd found lines that Steeeeve wouldn't cross, but not that guy.

"Or maybe there's someone who has a cold."

Clearly, medicine cupcakes would make them feel loads better.

The spice level plus the cough medicine might actually work for a cold.

"Let me know if they agree to eat them," Stark said. "I'm curious now." Not curious enough to try one himself, obviously.

Kurt was feeling adventurous. Maybe it was the excitement over the DnD game later that evening. But he decided to funnel that nervous energy and anticipation into his cupcakes ... and that is why he ended up with dark chocolate and chili pepper cupcakes with chocolate fudge icing and a cinnamon candy on top!

"Lots of chocolate," Stark said approvingly. Maybe also a lot of spice but maybe the chocolate would balance it all out.

Was Steph doing something involving cinnamon candy and cayenne pepper, and trying to make her cupcakes look like they were exploding?

Yup, and actually doing a pretty good job on making them look like they were exploding to boot.

How edible they were going to be for people who didn't like that "immolated" mouthfeel was a different story, though.

"That's a lot of pepper," Stark observed.

"I didn't mean to use that much. Some of it was clumped together and just fell in," Steph admitted, "so I just decided to go with the theme."

"It could still work," Stark said though he was dubious. "They'll certainly be very red?"

"I could always try and make them look like they're fully on fire if I have to," Steph mused. "Combo decoration and warning."

"You could. Good luck?"

"Fireball cupcakes. Area of effect damage -- oh, maybe I can top them off with a little red d20 because eating these will require a saving throw," Steph said with frankly unsettling glee. "I got a bunch of the tiny dice sets in last week. This would totally work."

Stephanie, no.

Stark was thoroughly confused by all that and definitely looked it.

"Do you have edible dice?"

"No, they're just regular dice, but I bet I could totally find some," Steph said, still grinning with maniacal enthusiasm. "Not for this week. But next time!"

"Oh. People might think they were candy."

And those cupcakes were going to dangerous already it seemed like!

"I mean, the urge to eat your dice is kind of omnipresent even when you don't mistake them for candy."

What?

"... it is? I've never tried to eat dice."

Steph, everything you were saying today was confusing.

Steph laughed. "If you're sitting at the table staring at them for long enough, sometimes it just seems like a good idea to put them in your mouth. Especially if they're all fancy looking, and look like candy."

She wasn't trying to be confusing?

Nell made some delicious chocolate and cream cupcakes with a raspberry puree inside and as asauce to put on top if anyone wanted. She decorated them with pink and red swirled icing, some with cinnamon candies and some with swedish fish on top.

Illyana was absolutely going for the hot sauce to see what she could make. Because she liked cake and she liked hot sauce, and it would probably be fine.

Guillermo decided to make his cupcakes a mix of fruits - so watermelon, cherries and strawberries and then because he was curious to see what happened he decided to mix in some spicy peppers and hot sauce.

It was probably not going to be edible.

About why the island puts medicine in his cupcake ingredient boxes or about anything else that strikes your fancy.

I'm around today but may disappear sporadically while I try and get ready to go on a trip tomorrow.

Gonna go see some weirdos I know.
