Library, Thursday 7/14

Why was the library ceiling missing a section? Why were there plastic tarps covering some of the shelves? Why were there blueprints on a table?

Belle had no idea. It wasn't as if anyone informed library staff when things were planned in here, or when they weren't planned.

The desk seemed unaffected, at least, so she sat down there to check in some books that had appeared since the last time someone was there.

RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES

I had to go in last week to finish something I didn't get done before the end of June after spending a week in a plague house. Walked in to find the graphic novel section covered in plastic tarps and a large chunk of the ceiling missing and blueprints sitting on some desks. No idea why. Nobody tells us things.

"Are you planning some kind of heist?" Why was that your first thought, Five? Why?

"Why would I be planning a heist?" Belle asked.

Obviously she would have consulted with him before doing that!

"I don't know. Reasons," Five replied, clearly very upset he wasn't consulted in said heist that wasn't actually happening.

Because, yes. He was the best assistance on island for it.

"I don't have any reasons to plan a heist," Belle informed him. "Do you?"

Because clearly she needed to know if he did. For reasons.

"Not at the present moment, but that could always change."

"Well. I don't have plans for any heists either but I will try to keep you informed if that changes. Did you need anything today or are you just here to interrogate me about future criminal enterprises?"

"The latter, mostly." Because just wandering by the library was a normal thing to do.

Wandering by the library was totally normal. So was wandering in to the library. No ulterior motives to be seen, obviously.

"I see. Do you think I ought to be planning a heist? I do have some free time in my schedule."

"It might be a good use of your time," he suggested. "Keep the mind active."

"You don't think my mind is active?"

Belle had never been so insulted in her life...since the last time she'd talked to Five.

It was his charm, really.

"It could always be more active."

Sure. Charm was a word.

"Really." Belle was unimpressed, Five. "I had no idea you found my mind wanting. What ought I to be doing?"

"Planning a heist," Five replied slowly, frowning as he tried to puzzle through the reaction. Because this was their normal level of bickering.

"And what am I meant to be heisting?" That wasn't even a word, was it? "And surely there are other ways to occupy my time and my brain?"

"I don't know, some other part of the library." Yes, make it into the Special Collections, guys. "It's a good exercise. I do it frequently."

He planned how to kill people just in case, actually. But same difference.

What could possibly go wrong with sneaking into Special Collections?

"It hardly seems wise to perform a heist where I work," Belle pointed out. "And what have you been heisting?" Still not a word, Belle.

"I'll have you know that the majority of my professional career has the sort of crimes that would be in the record books." Okay, that was a little bit of an exaggeration, Five. You were a hitman. For yourself. But that wouldn't be known just yet.

"You're boasting about committing crimes," Belle pointed out. "Honestly, Five."

What? She could smile about that. It was ~~kind of hot~~ interesting when he talked like this!

"It's not a boast. It's just facts." And kinda boasty.

"It sounds like boasting," Belle informed him.

"And you are enjoying it," he replied smugly.

"Why do you think that?" Belle asked while not even attempting to deny that accusation.

"You aren't yelling at me." Oh, if that was his measure of people liking him...

"I only yell when you deserve it!"

"I never deserve it."

Oh, that was patently false.

"That is one of the most ridiculous things you've ever said to me, Five."

"I rarely deserve it," he amended. "Because I'm usually correct about things."

Okay, he totally believed that one.

"You're correct often," Belle allowed. "I'm not certain usually is the word I would choose."

"Name one time I was wrong," Five countered.

"I seem to remember someone arguing with me about magic when we first met?"

...rude.

"Because magic is ridiculous."

"No more ridiculous than anything else here!"

Less ridiculous than many things here, actually.

"I beg to differ," Five huffed. But then again, he was raised by an alien, a talking chimpanzee, and a robot alongside his super powered siblings. So...

Belle had traveled via magic bean and had no room to talk about ridiculousness.

"How is magic more ridiculous than you turning into a cat?"

"Some people turn into cats!" He had no evidence of this. None.

"You and your brother do," Belle agreed. "Which seems like magic to me."

"You would think so." Oh yeah, that was a great argument, Five.

"I just said it," Belle said with a roll of her eyes. "Obviously I think so."
