How to Form a Band, Thursday - Period 1

"Genre!" Jaskier proclaimed loudly to the class. "It can make or break your success as a musician. If there's no love for your particular skill in the area, sure you might try to correct that, but it would take time and the phrase starving artist is no joke."

"What my collegue means is that there's no shame in selling out," Cara said, a beatific smile on her face.
"That exactly," he admitted with a little wince. "So, perhaps we should determine what is the best genre for our little class that is also popular or on the cusp of becoming popular."

And don't say ska.

Cara and Jaskier were in a rare moment of agreement on that. "Though sticking to your principles is also an option."

Unless your principles said ska.

Was Steph going to sit here and look mortally offended by the whole 'no shame in selling out' thing? Yes. Yes, she was.

" Well as far as what I like to listen to and what I can play, it's mostly rock and country" Dwight offered. "I'm ok with a lot of other music types, just not rap or... I think they call it techno." And there were a few others because Dwight had no idea ska, dubstep, or a few other music types even existed.

Tisarwat thought about it for a moment, and then offered out, "Most of what I know is classical," thank you, Victorian roommate, "but I'm not really sure how to classify what I like to listen to most? I guess something like 'chill music to just vibe to.'"

Guess who she could thank for that use of phrase.

"That applies for me as well," Hannibal said, "though I am also familiar with some emo and hard rock. 'Chill music' would go well with keyboard and theremin, though."

"Indie rock," Steph said immediately, partly because she was biased and partly to vent her feelings about the whole selling-out thing, but mostly because she was a Life is Strange protagonist and therefore pretty much obligated.

"I don't really know what the kind of music I like is called," Vi said, rubbing her neck. "I mean, I do like... indie rock too?"

Three guesses where she'd picked that up.
