A Guide to Mechanical Engineering - Thursday, 4th Period

It took Goose a while to remember that he had a class later in the day this session but he did in fact remember when his class was and turned up on time.

“Welcome to A Guide to Mechanical Engineering,” Goose nodded to the class, “I thought for our first class we would start with introductions and then for our first practical we will work on making a Coil Winding Machine, to start getting a feel for machines and it’s a good introduction to automation,” Goose explained.

“So I’m Shane Gooseman, most people call me Goose,” he said, “however it is fine if you would rather call me Shane or Mr. Gooseman instead,” he paused, “I’m from West Australia, 2107 and I serve with the Series 5 Galaxy Rangers where I do a lot of engineering work for the team,”

Mostly because he had damaged the machines in the first place and that’s why they needed fixing but he wasn’t going to mention that fact.

Name, previous experience with engineering, any other interesting facts you'd like to share.

"I'm Alara Kitan," Alara said when it was her turn, "I'm a Junior and I'm from the planet Xelaya and it's 2411 for me back home, my only other experience with engineering has been from the classes I've taken here but I would like to learn more," she added.

"Hello Alara," Goose nodded, "I hope you'll continue to enjoy taking this class," he told her.

Dwight looked around the class as introductions began and once again felt a bit out of place with being likely the oldest person in the class again.

"I'm Dwight," he said when the introductions got to him. "I am the resident handyman and run the Fix & Clean shop on the island. I don't really have any experience with engineering but figured it might be something to have a better understanding and grasp of to help with my work."

“Hello Dwight,” Goose nodded as he listened to his introduction, “I hope that that this class will help you with your work, is there anything in particular that you’d like to learn about engineering during this course?” he asked.

Dwight gave that question a moment's thought then nodded. "Really anything basic that would help with repair and maintenance work. I honestly know little about machinery and such so even things like vacuums, appliances, and such... I'd say car engines but well, it's Fandom" he said with a slight chuckle.

"Hi!" Graham beamed at the class and lifted a hand in an excited wave once his turn came up. "I'm Graham! I'm from a land called Llewdor, and we don't have mechanical engineering there, at least, not that I know of, we definitely didn't have anything like it at Knight School, I guess the closest thing may have been Dragon Engineering? But that's probably much different! Anyway, I'm very eager to find out all about mechanical engineering, though, even if it doesn't even involve any dragons."

That was definitely different and Goose blinked a bit at that introduction, “hello Graham, Mechanical Engineering doesn’t involve dragons I’m afraid,” even though now he was definitely curious to see what that would be like, “but hopefully you’ll still find this class interesting though,” he added.

"Learning new things is always interesting!" said Graham brightly, with an enthusiastic swing of a finger in the air as if to emphasize the point.

And maybe....eventually....he could find a way to make it involve dragons!

Work on making your own Coil Winding Machines from the ~~moddable~~ supplies at hand.

Alara was trying to be very careful with setting up her machine and for the most part she was mostly able to follow the steps that she had to.

She had a bit of trouble getting the cardboard into place but she only ended up squashing a couple of the pieces so that was pretty good progress for her.

A knowledge of things like this was actually going to be incredibly helpful to Graham one day in his career, and so, even though he didn't necessarily know that, he was hunkered down over the project as he put it carefully together.

You could tell just how hard he was working on it, too, by the way his tongue was poking one of the corner of his mouth just a little from the concentrated effort.

Dwight looked at the pile of materials for a moment and tried to figure out where to start first. As he worked he got a little more confident, especially as he saw the thing start to come together and look, more or less, the way it was supposed to!

He's there if you need him.

At least tomorrow I only have a relatively shortish shift to get through, it's been a while since I've had one of those.
