Cuisines of Earth, Tuesday
Class had been handwavily instructed to meet at Portalocity, and Hannibal waited until everyone was there before he nodded, smiled, and began.
"Welcome, everybody. We will be meeting here for each class unless I inform you otherwise, and then we will be heading out to eat somewhere, a different place every week, so that you will hopefully get a good idea of the breadth of culinary styles Earth has to offer."
He waved them through the portal and waited until they were all there before resuming. "Today we will be eating in New York. It's a large city in the country Fandom is attached to, and has a long history of immigration, and thus a large variety of cuisines. We will be eating at Upland, which features enough of a selection that everybody should be able to find something to eat. The local language is English, or whatever it is you call the language we're currently speaking, so if you have any questions, you can ask the staff directly."
He led the way in and they were shown to a table. "While we wait for our food, please introduce yourselves. In addition to your name, I would like to know if there are any foods you would like to try, and I will also need to know if you have any allergies, food aversions, or religious or philosophical restrictions on your diet."
He smiled. "I am Doctor Hannibal Lecter, I am from a version of modern Earth, and there is very little I won't eat, though I do prefer my food without too many processed chemicals in it." He nodded at the person next to him.

Listen to the lecture, look around
Re: Listen to the lecture, look around
Since they'd taken a portal and were in the restaurant, she supposed it didn't hit quite as hard as if they had taken a more conventional way to get there, but still! She was kind of in awe of that fact and the portal part of it just made it all that much more surreal. She just sort of kept shaking her head a little bit and tried to focus on finding something new and different and interesting on the menu to try so that she didn't just look like she was gawking too much.
Granted, most of the stuff on the menu was only going to make her gawk, too, especially since she wasn't even sure she knew what half this stuff even was!

Eat the food, introduce yourselves!

"My name's Liberty Hazlett," she offered, feeling a little more conscious of her rural drawl in this nice fancy restaurant in this big fancy city. "But most people just call me Libby. I'm from Tennessee, right here in the USA, and I grew up with a lot of simple foods, I guess, though I've probably eaten quite a few things that other people might consider a bit...different."
There was a reason why she was sometimes a bit uncomfortable around the squirrels on the island, and it had nothing to do with their voyeuristic tendencies.
"That said, I don't think I have any allergies, and I'm pretty open to trying all sorts of new things. I don't usually like a lot of sweets, though, which I know is kind of strange, but we try not to have too much sugar back home." She smiled faintly. "The Littles are plenty rambunctious enough as it is without the help, really."
Plus, sweets and sugary things tended to cost more when that money could be stretched in far better ways.
