It was the first workshop of a new session which meant your teachers actually made a modicum of effort to be on time for the start of class. Which was mostly accomplished by holding class at J,GoB so that they only needed to stumble in from next door, clothing somewhat askew.

"Treasure!" Isabela declared. "That's it, that's the class. Over the next few week, you're going to be learning all the important things about finding treasure, including the most important one, recognising it. Because treasure isn't just piles of riches liberated from those who don't need it. Though it certainly counts."

"It could also be a rare cultural artifact, or the last cup of caf on this island," Aphra said, curled over a steaming cup of not caf. "Or something more ephemeral, like previously lost knowledge, or the validation of your peers."

"That girl you like liking you back," Isabela added, looking at no one in particular. "Or boy, or person, depending."

"The point is, treasure is a very broad reaching concept, so in order to figure out how to find it, you need to figure out what it is. So it's time for introductions, tell everyone your name and what treasure means to you. Remember your answers, we'll be revisiting them later."

What does treasure mean to you?

"I'm Steph," she said, not at all giving Isabela an incredulous, slightly betrayed look before adding in a playfully sarcastic tone, "and maybe the real treasure actually was the friends we made along the way?"

Isabela just smiled brightly at her like the shameless pirate she was. "Oh, yes, friendship is a real treasure."

What? She was just agreeing with Steph.

"Well, it is, right?" asked the girl who was over taking it for granted, but wasn't sharing that with the class.

Pirate, Gingrich, what did you expect?

"Okay, fine. How about adventure? New places and --" Shit, there was no way she could go with this that Isabela couldn't turn around on her somehow. "The thrill of the unknown. Finding cool shit in unexpected places."

Isabela just nodded and kept on grinning at her. "I know just how exciting it is to be welcomed on a new shore."

"Wow," Steph said, a little exasperated but also? Respect. But also stop feeding her imagination, Isabela. "Do you ever get chased off instead?"

Just curiosity!

"Not really." It was more chased after while she made off with the booty. "I'm very personable."

"Yeah, I've noticed," Steph replied, smirking just a bit. "I was actually serious about that adventure thing, though. New experiences and all that."

Look, she was going to hear it one way or another, she might as well just let it happen.

"Then I'll do my best to see that you'll have new experiences to treasure."

Was that a promise or a threat? Whichever it was, Isabela sounded terrifyingly sincere.

"Thanks?" Should Steph worry? Probably. "I think."

"Hi! I'm Graham!" Even though the teachers already knew that from last time, he met this introduction just as eagerly as that first, grinning and waving a hand. "Graham Cr-mmphher."

The rest of that was muffled by an ill-timed bite of his pastry, which he realized a bit too late, and hastily swallowed it down with a sheepish, apologetic chuckle.

"And, obviously, there are treasures like shiny gold coins and magical artifacts and neat weapons, but there's also treasure like friendship and prestige and the self-satisfaction of a job well done!"

"Aww, you came back!" No need to sound so surprised, Aphra. "And we're two for two on friendship."

There was no way that could go wrong with Aphra's track record there.

"I did come back!"

There was probably no need for Graham to sound so pleased and proud of that fact as he did, either.

"And that's not surprising, really! Friendship is great! I think I can say that confidently, now that I even have some that are actual other people, too!"

Just gonna...just gonna go right ahead and say that out loud, huh, Graham?

And he sounded so stoked about it, too!

Aphra nodded. "That's great." Oh, oh no, the universe was going to eat this one alive.

You'd....be pretty surprised about that one, actually.

But no one could blame anyone for thinking that, especially since he certainly didn't help it along much with his big, eager grin and enthusiastic, "It sure is! So, yes, friendship is treasure, but also shiny gold coins, which means treasure can come in many forms, and that's why it's so great!"

Said with the confidence and assurance of a clearly winning conclusion.

Aphra was thinking it. She was thinking it hard. RIP, this kid.

"Exactly."

"I'm Belle and I suppose treasure could be nearly anything. I've always been fond of stories and books and finding new ones is always exciting."

Belle certainly did not think ~~murderous~~ boys liking her counted as treasure, how very dare.

"I think perhaps treasure is simply something exciting and valuable to you. It wouldn't have to be riches, though that would be thrilling to find."

But what about those boys liking each other as well as you, Belle?

Even if Isabela wasn't grinning quite as broadly as she had at Steph, there was still something vaguely gleeful about her smile.

"Oh, I'm a big fan of collecting new and exciting stories," she said.

"I'm Nell and I s'pose lots of things can be considered treasure." She wasn't about to go into what God's Cloud of Glory church would have to say about that. "I'd say good and trusted friendship is a better treasure than any gold."
