Choose Your Own Adventure: Tuesday, 3rd Period (5/24)

There was a soundtrack of retro, 8-bit video game music playing softly in the background today, because Steph would swear this stuff was great for motivation without being too distracting.

The pencils and markers and colored pens were back, too, along with stacks of graph paper and large-format blank sketch pads, but more notably there were some new things out on the tables: craft and EVA foam and carbon fiber rods in several pre-cut lengths, various scissors and cutting tools, glues, duct tape, paint, and other moddable within reason craft supplies.

"How's everybody doing with their character creation so far?" Steph asked as soon as it looked like everyone was present. "Coming along? Hope so, because we're going to start with some hands-on work this week. I'm talking costume props and weapons here, people. It's gonna be awesome."

She did a little spin turn and gestured toward the table of supplies with a flourish.

"Now, just to be clear, this isn't going to be a combat heavy LARP, but half the fun is in wandering around and getting to whack each other -- lightly -- with foam swords and things," she added, holding up her hands for emphasis, then tilted her head. "Maybe half. Give or take. Point is, I'm not taking that part of the fun away from you."

She gave a quick overview on the basics of building LARP weaponry, helpfully demonstrating the various components as she did.

"As for costumes... be creative. See what you can come up with out of your own closets -- hell, your friends' closets, as long as you have their permission. If you want to spend your own money on stuff, I'm not gonna stop you, but it's not necessary. I'm a big fan of people exercising their imaginations in these situations, and sometimes all you really need is a cool hat, or a little bit of facepaint, and the fun of bringing your characters to life. The rest is just a bonus." Her expression got a little more serious. "Anyone who tries to make anyone else feel like their costume isn't fancy enough or whatever is not going to like what I have to say to them. Got it?"

And just like that the serious moment was over, and she was back to being upbeat and enthusiastic. "Okay! Anyone who still wants or needs help working on their characters, come and talk to me. And start thinking about what you want your character to accomplish in the actual story, because we're going to start working on that next week. Otherwise, go nuts coming up with your costumes, get started on building your props, work together as much as you want to. Just... maybe don't glue yourselves to anything, okay? Trust me when I say that can get kinda bad."

Well, since Vi was playing a cat person, she guessed at the very least she needed the right kind of ears, so she looked through the supplies until she found some fabric that was a close enough colour match for her hair and started working on that.

The first thing that Guillermo was making sure that his costume had was a cape and that was what he working on for the first part of his costume.

He was going with a standard black cape but he thought he could maybe improve it with some sequins and make it a bit more interesting as well.

Graham wasn't too concerned about his outfit--after all, he had been planning on minoring in Creative Costuming if he'd stuck with his knight school classes, and his two key elements (cloak and cap!) were already accounted for, which meant he was focusing on the weaponry.

He really wanted to make something that would make Miss Amaya proud, and he was definitely using her weapons wall as inspiration as he sketched out a few ideas for swords, axes, maybe a bow...

The trickiest part, he realized, we just figuring out the best places for spikes.

But he tended to favor bow designs, so that was likely where he'd end up.

Libby's focus was definitely going into her costuming today; she knew more about that than weapons, really, and she was playing a healer, so she didn't imagine she'd be doing a lot of fighting, anyway. She didn't think she'd be good at it, either, and when she considered weapons, she just thought of maybe a nice staff or something like that (simple bonks on the head when necessary and then she'd be doe with it), but her costume...

What she had in mind was pretty simple, maybe a nice robe or something like that, but what she was really hoping to find in the assortment of supplies was something to make a lot of pouches and pockets out of. That was definitely something she imagined a healer character wouldn't be able to have enough of!

There were a few things Kurt was going to need for his character at a minimum- a pair of dog/wolf ears (shouldn't be too complicated really) a tail (if he could figure something to work with his existing one) and then for general costume a nice hooded cloak, wrist gauntlets, and a belt of some sort. And for weapon, he definitely was going to go with a set of small daggers that would be easy to throw and hide on his person if necessary.

Hannibal would probably start with his leathers as a base, but they were much more modern than the setting called for (last season, though; he'd have to do something about that).

So he got out a pencil and paper, sketched his pants and jacket, and then started altering them to look more medieval and noting what fabrics or foam he might need for that.

Rosa was definitely going to make herself something to gently whack people with. She picked out a decent length of carbon rod and swung it around a few times thoughtfully. If she was going to be a tiny gnome then her weapon ought to be equally lightweight. A sewing needle-sword maybe? Or a teeny tiny axe?

She looked at the various bits of foam, then grinned as inspiration struck. She set about putting together a giant foam exacto knife spear.

"I can't sew the best, but I can build!" Yang hollered cheerfully. "So if anyone wants weapon help, let me know!"

She'd already personally started making herself a two-headed great-axe. Enough of a change from her regular weapon that she didn't have an unfair advantage, but plenty of fun to swing around.

Isabela considered her options, then started sketching out a costume that, somehow, managed to be even more revealing than her usual clothes.
