"We thought we'd start small on disasters," Aphra said. "Close to home as it were, because you need to build to the big ones."

"They creep up on you," Isabela agreed. "Just lurking out of view, like some ominous weirdo outside your window at night who needs to learn a few things about boundaries." Unlike her who knew plenty about boundaries, she just didn't care about them.

Aphra took a moment to process that simile. "In any case one of the most familiar disasters you'll encounter is the bad date, including its even worse cousin the bad blind date, where interfering friends have decided you'll hit it off with some random, and then you don't. Proving your friends know nothing about your taste in people. Not that I've ever actually had that problem." Whether this was because Aphra was a delight, the bad date, or just didn't have any friends was up for debate.

"Anyway, pull up a chair at one of the tables and figure out how you're going to salvage something from your breakfast date," Isabela told them cheerfully. "Even if it's just a free breakfast!"

Aphra will not be taking opinions on why she's never had a bad blind date.

There a several two person tables set up for a romantic brunch, so sit down, pair up, and make your terrible dates count!

...dates? Blind dates? Graham felt a small swell of dread that would put even him off his choco-chip pancakes in his stomach, which seemed to refuse the swallowing of the lump in his throat. This was fine! He was fine! He could do dates! Sure! He'd never had one before, but how hard could it really be?

So he pulled out a chair, had a seat, and hoped he wasn't about to find out the answer to that question!

Vi sat down at one of the empty tables and immediately started going over the menu. Because free food.

Well, Clare was a wee lesbian, so Graham wasn't her ideal date. "Hullo," she said, giving Vi a nervous smile.

"Hey," Vi said, looking up from the menu and giving Clare a friendly smile in return. "Clare, right?"

"Aye, that's me," Clare babbled. "Clare Devlin, from Derry and also the second floor. I think. It might be the third? I can't remember right now! Oh, saints preserve me, I've forgotten where I live!"

Clare. Breathe. Good Lord.

"Hey, Clare, just breathe," Vi said, reaching across to pat her hand. "
It's me, Vi, we've seen each other around before."

"I've never even been on a pretend date before," Clare said. "I'm terrible at it!"

"That's fine," Vi assured her. "Apart from those three minute things I've never been on one either."

That drunken hook up with Tahani was definitely not a date. Nor were all those meals she shared with Steph to make sure she was actually eating properly.

"You're doing better than I am so far," Clare said. "I think I clean forgot my last name there too."

"You didn't," Vi said, gently. "You're doing great. Just think of it as two friends sharing a meal."

"In that case, it's a good thing this is free because I'm just about flat broke," Clare admitted.

Sure Vi had money now, but she knew that feeling. "You've never dined and dashed?"

Vi, no.

Clare looked appalled. "Of course not! Me ma would murder me!"

"Huh," Vi said. "My dad never really had a problem with us doing it."

Sute, Vander would've preferred if they didn't do it to anyone they knew, but he never told them to stop it either.

"It was bad enough being banned from Fionnula's and that was entirely Michelle's doing," Clare said. "My family would never bear the shame of it happening twice."

Who are at their own table, with mimosas. Have they quite possibly misappropriated teaching funds for a fancy brunch? Probably!
