"Good morning, everybody." Was it morning? It was...day. Close enough. Jon gave them all a professional if slightly awkward nod. "This is...well, less a class than a learning opportunity, to hopefully help anybody who's unfamiliar with current culture in this area.

"Today, let's start by introducing ourselves and when and where we're from. My name is Jonathan Sims, and I'm from London in the UK, which is a different country from the one we're nominally in, but the same planet. I came here from...let's say functionally 2019, although for a few years previous I was too occupied to keep track of pop culture, so I'll be catching up on a few years." He nodded at the first student to continue.

After that, he nodded again. "Right. First thing to get acquainted with then is a phone." He held up his. "If you don't have one yet, you can come see mine or look over someone else's shoulder. These are very important these days, and not even primarily for making calls. Apps are the things on the screen, and there are some widely used ones, like Instagram, Twitter, and even god help us Tiktok, that are good to know your way around." Yes, Melanie, he knew what a meme was. "Let's all get accounts and learn our way around if you haven't yet, and try not to get swamped by all the trolling masquerading as discourse. Let me know if you need help."

Wonder how up to date Jon is. Try to remember he's actually a millennial.

Who you are and when and where you're from. How much you might need to catch up on.

"Hi, everyone," Libby started, with a sheepish smile and a wave of her hand. "My name's Libby...well, it's Liberty, but everyone calls me Libby."

She gave Mr. Sims an apologetic smile, since he probably already knew that from the last class but others might not!

"I'm from Tennessee," a pause, "which is actually right here in these United States. I'm actually from this time period, too, but, well....my family, we grew up without a TV and we didn't get much exposure to more worldly popular culture things, so I've got some catching up to do."

Here, she stopped a little and laughed. "I've actually seen more movies and films in just my first semester here than I have my entire life 'til now! I've been reading through all sorts of books, too, but I'd really like to learn more about music, I mostly just know David Bowie....my best friend back home's a huge fan, and we've branched out a little from there together, but..."

She trailed off, realizing she was rambling, and there was that apologetic smile again.

"Anyway, long story short, I guess I'm pretty excited to see what else there is out there." Her head bobbed in a nod, a small awkward curtsy with her long skirt. "Thank you."

"Hello, Libby." Jon smiled back. "David Bowie is a good place to start; he's an icon. He's...erm. Unfortunately he hasn't made much music in the last few years. Except for, um, posthumously." Sorry if you hadn't known that already, Libby. That was Jon's version of being tactful.

"We'll probably be watching more films, too," he assured her.

“I’m Shane Gooseman, Goose,” Goose said, it felt rather weird being in a class again but Doc had kept complaining about his lack of pop culture knowledge and so had signed him up for a class.

“I’m from 2107, West Australia but I don’t really …well understand popular culture,” it was a bit of an understatement, “as my teammate keeps complaining every time he makes a reference and I don’t understand it,” which happened a lot.

He paused, “I’ve seen some movies that came out in this time period,” he said, “but that’s really it,”

"There's not really any guarantee our present will be your past," Jon pointed out, "but hopefully there will be enough of an overlap to help."

“I’m Liz Sherman,” Liz said when it was her turn, “I’ve spent the last several years living in Newark, New Jersey but I grew up in Kansas City and further south, it’s 2003 for me back home.”

She paused, “I still have a bit of catching up to do with popular culture like movies and tv shows, I only found out recently that they made even more Space Battles movies,”

"There's an entire debate about them," Jon said a bit sourly. He still remembered some people in Research at the institute forgoing actual work to argue about it. "But you had the internet and such at least, so hopefully it won't be too big a culture shock."

Tisarwat gave everyone a nod when it was her turn. "I'm Tisarwat," she offered, "and I'm not taking this class to catch up so much as I am to just...understand this planet's culture better, I hope. I'm from a completely different universe with a much more advanced society, so my cultural references are pretty far off. But I do want to understand it better. Hopefully, this can get that started a little more."

She gave a faint smile. "All my references lately come mostly from my roommate, and she's a couple centuries behind herself."

"Ah, so much of this may be entirely new for you," Jon noted. "I hope this does help; please feel free to ask as many questions as you like."

"My name is Belle, from the kingdom of Misthaven. I have a lot to catch up on, I think. Most of what I know is books and a few films."

"So, erm, you're not from a version of Earth at all, if I'm remembering correctly," Jon said. "I wonder if you've become acquainted with the internet yet."

“I’m Jo …I mean I’m Josephine Jones but I go by Jo”, Jo said when it was her turn, “I’m from South West England 1953 so I have a lot of catching up to do but I’ve been enjoying the books and movies that I’ve been watching in class and learning about the internet,” she said.

"Welcome again, Jo." Jon smiled. "We'll probably be doing quite a bit of the internet this time, so please let me know if you have any questions."
