Great Legends of Hyrule; Wednesday, Third Period [02/09].
"Good morning, intrepid adventurers and explorers!" With far too much energy even for a third period class, Sidon greeted the students with a bright and eager grin as always. "And welcome back to another lesson in Great Legends of Hyrule! This week, I decided we might go a little topical and discuss some of the many Legends of Hyrule that have to do with love and romance in light of the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday! So get ready to sigh and swoon and get starts in your eyes, everyone, as there is no lack of intrigue and passion throughout the land of Hyrule!
"Let us begin," Sidon...well, began, "then, with a tale that those of you who have taken my Zora history class should already know, one that is very near and dear to me because it is of my very own culture, and that is the Miracle of the White Scale! For, you see, once upon a time, long ago when Hyrule was a land still young and fresh, there was a Zora king who cared deeply for his people and the land, though he did not have such a passion for fighting and war! Unfortunately, in those times as well as these, such things cannot always be avoided, and the kingdom was under threat of vast lizalfo hordes! Still, as an honorable leige, the Zora king knew that he must face the enemy with courage and bravery and fight all the same! But his queen, who loved him as dearly and deeply as she did her own people, could not stand to let her majesty go into the field of battle alone. So she crafted for her king a very special armor, weaving into it a very special whiite scale that only female Zora possess. With this armor, the Zora king charged into battle, but the lizalfo army was strong and powerful, and after a long and arduous fight, the lizalfo general had the Zora king cornered. He lifted his sword to deal the final blow and...the very clouds in the sky parted, a beam of errant sunlight burst forth from the miraculous clearing of the weather, and shone down upon the king, striking the white scale of his Queen on his armor just so to blind the lizalfo general and turn the tides of the battle as the Zora king surged forward and struck his enemy down and victory was soon in his hands!"
He beamed, almost breathless at his vigorous retelling of the tale, all pride and toothy grin. "Because of this remarkable miracle of love and devotion, it has become a tradition ever since for all Zora princesses to craft a special armor for her future husband, weaving into it her very special White Scale. For generations, this special armor is how Zora princesses declare their love and intentions to a potential suitor, and the act of making the armor with their very own hands is a true sign of their devotion and desire.
"Now," Sidon continued with a faint chuckle, "I might be a little biased, but I find the Miracle of the White Scale to be the absolute pinnacle of romantic legends of Hyrule, but there are a few others that are worthy of our attention. For example, did you know that there is actually a location, said to be well-hidden and only to be discovered by those with the purest of hearts or romantic longing, in Hyrule where one may chance to meet their True Love and Soulmate! It is, appropriately, called the Lover's Pond, said to be shaped, of course, like a heart. Those who seek out this mysterious locale venture forth to also seek out the person they are destined to be with, and they say that, should you actually find it, you will find that person standing there on the other side, as if drawn together by the pond's palpable, passionate influence! For such a reward, is it any wonder that many hopeful souls go wandering the hill of Hyrule for a chance to stumble upon such a magnificent meeting?
"One might also count the voyages of the Gerudo as a sort of romantic journey, as well," Sidon added with a bit of a grin. "The Gerudo are one of the many races of Hyrule with a distinct culture and tradition, marked mostly by the fact that the Gerudo are all women! There is a legend that says a male is born to them once every hundred years, but that is a tale for another time! For this tale, we focus on the fact that the Gerudo keep to themselves in a walled city in the Gerudo desert, where no men are allowed to enter! And while some Gerudo women, who call themselves vai, are quite content in this arrangement, others may wish to venture out into the world to seek the romantic companionship of a male, called voe! And so many young Gerudo women make a pilgrammage all across Hyrule to find that one special voe to call their own. Sometimes, they will choose to stay out in the world with their voe, but, more often than not, they will remain with them for a short time before eventually returning back to Gerudo Town to resume their lives as a single vai. I clearly cannot verify this as fact or fiction, as both a male and a Zora that cannot handle the harsher climates of the Gerudo Desert, anyway, but I hear that they even have special classes in Gerudo Town to advise hopeful romantics on the best ways to snag the voe of their dreams! I must admit," he chuckled faintly, giving a faint wink to the students, "that is a class I wouldn't mind having the opportunity to sit in on some day!
"Many of these stories," Sidon mused, "do tend to lean heavily toward the longing, and there are doubtless many various Rito or Goron or Hylian tales I am not privy to as a Zora, but I will add just one more, which has a broader connotation, but, going back to Zora's Domain, we do have an area along the river we call the Bank of Wishes, and it is not an uncommon practice for young and hopeful Zoras to venture down to the Bank of Wishes with a letter detailing out their dreams for an ideal match. They tuck that letter into a special container and then toss it into the water below, where it is said that a water fairy will whisk it away, and, if their lucky, their dreams of an ideal match may some day come true!
"In my experience," Sidon concluded, his smile now soft and a little distant and tender, "love comes to you when you least expect it, in the most surprising of places, but one thing I feel with every inch of my soul is that if one does not put themselves out there, then how do they ever expect to find it? But perhaps you think different. Perhaps you've experienced differently! Perhaps you have your own great romantic legends of your own worlds that you'd like to share! As usual, that is, of course, what I hope you'll be willing to partake in for the rest of our time together today. What do you think of these romantic legends of Hyrule? What are some of your favorites from your own worlds? Are you a big fan of romantic stories? I would love," and, yes, there was another chuckle there, "to hear your thoughts!"
