Books vs Movies, Tuesday first period

Jon looked healthier today than he had in some time - not that all the scars had gone away, but he seemed alert and more confident today, if a bit sad.

"I hope you all enjoyed today's reading," he began. "The movie received a number of awards and was critically acclaimed, though there are a number of changes from the book, some for reasons of condensing the action, and others to make the characters' arcs more poignant. So let's watch the film and then discuss whether you think they worked or not."

He wrote on the board. "And for next week, please read 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight'.

Discuss! Did combining several wardens into one work? Was it more poignant to have Brooks do what he did, or should they have let him die in a retirement home? Is the whole thing Christian allegory, or secular? Should for-profit prisons be abandoned?

“That was rather brutal to watch,” Jo admitted as she started to consider the questions, “but I suppose it did have more an impact since Brooks character has a bigger part in the movie but I do think they should have let him be able to die in a retirement home,” Jo considered.

"I suppose we'd all prefer that," Jon said. "It's a good example of changing things for reasons other than simplifying a story, though."
