Creature Languages, 4/17, Period 4

There is candy and soda for the students, as well as herbal tea.

Dream waits for the students to assemble, then begins his lecture.

"Hello. Today we begin our study of the last animal language we will discuss this semester. It is one that may be perhaps closer to your own tongues than many of the others we have studied -- that of simians, especially monkeys."

Dream cues up a videotaped lecture in the DVD player. "This speaker makes the unfortunately common error of conflating monekys with apes, but it is still a reasonable discussion of the similarities and differences between the uses made of languages by simians, and those by man."

"I also have a handout containing a touch more information about monkeys, and a second handout about squirrel monkeys specifically, such as our own Mr. Nielson."

"Ask questions, should you have them."

"Blair," Molly whispered, even more concerned now. "What's wrong?"

Blair took a few deep breaths and turned to smile shakily at Molly. "Sorry 'bout that, Molly. You startled me."

Molly was still looking at him with concern. "What's the matter, Blair?"

"Monkeys." Blair whispered, pointing at the screen. "They're all...they...you know..."

Blair lamented briefly that there wasn't there a way to tell his girlfriend about his fear of monkeys without losing his cool and macho image.

Then he lamented that he didn't have a cool and macho image to start out with.

With a sigh, he whispered across to her. "Monkeys sort of scare me. A little. Not very much. Hardly a smidgen, actually." A screech sounded from the screen and Blair jumped in his seat.

"Maybe two smidgens."

Molly looked at the screen. And then at Blair. And then at Pippi's monkey. "Even Mr. Neilson?" she asked.

Blair stared at Mr. Neilson warily and leaned closer to Molly to whisper. "He wears hats. Hats!"

He was sure that Molly would now understand and share his fear of all things simian.

Molly looked between Blair and Mr. Neilson again. "Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"

"Hats on people. Cute. Hats on monkeys. Evil Scary." Blair nodded seriously. "It's practically scientific."

"You're going to have to explain that to me, because after living next door to Mr. Neilson all semester, I'm pretty sure he isn't evil," she said

"Pippi's really strong, right? Maybe he's hiding his evilness because he can't overpower her. He's just watching and waiting and learning until the right moment and then...bam!" He hit the desk with his fist. "He and his monkey minions will rise up and take over the whole planet, forcing people into servant roles and making us play music on the streets for bits of fruit!"

Molly looked at him with concern again. "Did you have a bad experience with monkeys when you were little?"

"I don't think so." Blair thought for a minute. "Although if it was really bad, it's possible I repressed it or something."

"Gosh, can you imagine how messed up I would be if I had some bad experience when I was little?"
