Creature Languages, 4/17, Period 4

There is candy and soda for the students, as well as herbal tea.

Dream waits for the students to assemble, then begins his lecture.

"Hello. Today we begin our study of the last animal language we will discuss this semester. It is one that may be perhaps closer to your own tongues than many of the others we have studied -- that of simians, especially monkeys."

Dream cues up a videotaped lecture in the DVD player. "This speaker makes the unfortunately common error of conflating monekys with apes, but it is still a reasonable discussion of the similarities and differences between the uses made of languages by simians, and those by man."

"I also have a handout containing a touch more information about monkeys, and a second handout about squirrel monkeys specifically, such as our own Mr. Nielson."

"Ask questions, should you have them."

Walter shifts his seat a bit closer to Pippi's and tries not to wince at how Victor looks and how he's behaving.

At this point he's aiming for something a bit cheerier than "throw myself on my sword" morose on the depression scale when he greets Pippi. "This is the perfect unit for you and Mr. Neilson, isn't it? Will he be guest speaking?"

Pippi looks up from her list and answers Walter in monkey.

//Yes. I think it is well for us. Dream did ask him to teach and he accepted.//

//I would like a chance to study with you and Mr. Neilson outside class.// He is slightly h. sapien-centrically surprised to see that "practice makes perfect" was a well-used monkey phrase. //Practice makes perfect.//

And distractions are very, very good things.

//Yes it does.// Pippi answered, //Would there be anything else you would like to speak of?//

There's a landmine of a question. Walter glances over at Victor and shakes his head. Not that. Not in Monkey.

//We will be playing in the water this week. Do you need help with food or drinks?//

//Yes. We will play in the water. There will be no sadness. Help with food is good. The question is how to...//

Hmm, monkey's don't cook...

//Make of the food indoors that is usually made with fire.//

//A good question. Maybe the smart// Walter's surprised that monkeys have inventors... //inventor woman could make something.//

//Perhaps rather we should make...// Again, monkey's don't tend to eat sandwitches...

//Layered food? Does your mentor have a press to flatten layered food and make it warm?//

Layered food doesn't immediately remind Walter of sandwiches, but he catches on with a bit of thought. //Yes. He does because his place to eat has everything. Who knows when someone might want to eat hot flat layered food?//

//Is there a way to...//

Monkeys don't "borrow" or "rent" they just "take" or "share".

//Use the thing for making food hot and flat?//

//I have to talk to him about other things. I will ask him then.//

Yay. Or not.

//I think he will say yes.//

If she said it in monkey, it would be "Please groom him for me."

So she said it in English instead.

"Tell him I said 'thanks'."

Walter looked down at the vocabulary sheet and snickered a little. At least it was clear why she'd switched to English. The idea of grooming Alfred in a monkey way was incredibly disturbing. Good thing she hadn't told him to do it.

"I will."
