Books vs Movies, Tuesday first period

"Right, welcome back." Jon rubbed his eyes and gestured toward the screen. "I...actually, I hadn't planned doing two children's movies back to back, but there are so very many awful biblical movies out there, so this is what you get. At least it's slightly less whitewashed than most of them.

"Anyway, enjoy it, think of how it chose to expand on, ignore, or subvert the original text, and then let's discuss it.

"And for next week, please read 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'."

"It's an interesting take on the story" Kurt offered, having grown up reading that particular story for most of his life so far. "Not sure I would have ever thought about there being songs involved with this story but... I guess if the movie was targeted for kids it kinda makes sense?"

I grew up on the Yul Brynner and Charleton Heston movie. But I will say Prince of Egypt always impressed me that for a kids movie they didn't water things down as much as they could have. I got chills several times watching it.

“I wouldn’t have thought that the book of Exodus would be adapted to an animated film,” Jo admitted, “but I still thought the story was told well in the film,” she said.

Woooooow, Jon, you're really going to drop this one on the sheltered fundie kid who grew up never watching TV and spending all of her imagination trying to imagine and expand on the Biblical stories that were all she had with a few exception, huh?

Libby had no idea what to expect when they would be doing part of Exodus (which of course she reread again, even though she practically knew it by heart; maybe more puppets? Slightly better production value than a church play?

But no. She got...this.

Listen, this poor girl was practically on the edge of tears by the end of the intro, with little gasps and small laughs whenever the story hit the expected beats and she was locked in whenver it strayed, fascinated by where it would go, and, sorry, once that burning bush entered the picture...she was just gone.

"Oh," said Libby, still looking incredibly star-struck, and trying very hard to hold tears back as she shook her head, because it was easier to hide during the movie, but if her classmates knew that she'd been so incredibly moved by some movie....

Well, at the same time, there was no shame in letting your faith and devotion shine through, either....

"I've read and heard Moses' tale told so many time, Mr. Sims, but I never thought...never like this, not even in picture books, that was so beautiful, and the story was....well, I thought it was very well done. It was...kind of an interesting choice, though, to make the Pharoah Moses' brother, but they sure cut out a lot, too, which I think is fair. Sometimes," she looked a little embarrassed to admit this out loud, far more embarrassed even than having cried in class, "the Bible does liked to drone on..."

Then she bit her lip, almost as if expecting a reprimant for that, even though she figured no one would care that she'd said that here...which made the thrill of saying it almost even better.

"I'm pretty sure my church wouldn't approve of that At. All." Nell wasn't sure if she was horrified or amused by the movie (that her mun hasn't ever seen), so she thought she'd just leave it at that.

"Well being Catholic, it's a story I know well and for a kid's version..." Kurt said, pausing for a moment in thought. "I think it did a decent job for the most part. It's no Douay-Rheims translation... I mean they glossed over a lot of things and changed a few things for the sake of the movie viewing I would assume. But, I am sure they could have done a lot worse."

Where would she even start. "For one thing, it's a movie. And it's animated. And there are talking creatures. And singing. And humor." She shrugged. "Just its existence would make the elders crazy."
