Meeting outside the school yet again, Gladio couldn't help but be amused as he waited to see, if anything, his students at least learned to be better prepared to dress accordingly for this class, arms folded in front of him before waiting to get started.

"Looks like the weather likes you guys," he stated, looking up at the cloudy sky. "It's practically balmy out here comapred to last weekend, huh? Still a bit chilly, sure, so if you don't already have a good jacket, I've got some in my pack, and I hope none of you," he wasn't thinking of anyone in particular, no, perish the thought, "are afraid of mud, because we'll be dealing with it a lot today. Let's head out," he cocked his head toward the woods, "scout out a good spot, and then we'll talk about today's topic when we get there. Gotta make the most out of this nice," yes, there was a small snerk in there, "weather while we got it, right?"

He clapped his hands together, hitched his thumbs toward the preserve.

"Gear up!" he said. "And let's roll out!"

Because who doesn't love trodding through the woods when everything's in that awkward stage of it being right on the brink of freezing and not freezing? But it's till a great time to enjoy nature! Or just grumble and converse with each other as you head into the woods.

Alara was really missing the weather on Xelaya right now.

She tried to stay focused on the hike and not think about how cold it was but she wasn’t really succeeding.

Tahani had bought better shoes! Granted, they were stupidly expensive for boots, and she was still wearing a long flowy dress, but, you know, baby steps.

Gladio definitely clocked those new boots and had to grin a little. Baby steps were baby steps, and you loved to see it. Now to find out how long until everything else followed suit. Progress! He wasn't going to say anything about it, but he was a little proud of her for it.

Granted, if he knew how much they'd cost, he might think a little different, but he'll take the improvements where he could!

Eventually, Gladio led the class into a convenient clearing on the far edge of the preserve with a nice view of the ocean, and he took a look around, nodding with satisfaction. "This'll do nicely," he said. "Let's set up camp, get a few campfires going, and then we'll get started on today' lesson, which is going to be important going into winter the way we are, and that's preventing hypothermia."

Pretty rich, coming from Mr. No-Shirt-while-Drinking-in-January, over here.

"Now," he said, as he knelt down to start his own campfire, talking after giving them another encouragement to do the same, "hypothermia is something you gotta watch out for if you're spending a lot of time outside in colder temperatures," which, if they hadn't gotten the hint yet, they'd be doing a lot of!, "where your body temp drops way below where it should be, usually due to being exposed to cold temperatures. Some of the stuff to do to prevent it is pretty obvious: warm, dry clothes, warm shelter when the tempertuare really drops, keeping good circulation going, and there's also things you'll want to prevent...."

And so, fire finished, he stood up, looked at it proudly, and continued to explain the basics of hypothermia, what to do to avoid it, and, more importantly, how to treat it if you think someone's got it.

"And this," he said, when he came around to his concluion, "is why preparation for this kind of thing is important. If you're out in cold weather," here, he now knelt beside his back, zippering it open and started to pull things out to hand to them with a grin, "spare blankets and maybe something warm to drink."

He pulled out his oh-so-trust Coleman^TM brand thermos and a few small mugs, started pouring the contents into the mugs and holding them out. "You guys like hot chocolate? I've got one with tea, too, and trust me, they're still warm, these Coleman^TM provide hours of keeping your beverages at temp for hours on end!"

And now that the product placement was out of the way, they could all just enjoy being out in nature in technically-not-freezing weather, and further discuss if they'd like!

Alara had a bit of trouble focusing on building her campfire this week because of the cold but she was making sure to pay close attention to the lecture because she imagined at some point she’d visit other planets that would have colder temperatures as well and this was definitely something she should be prepared for.

She also really liked the sound of hot chocolate right about now.

"I strongly recommend cuddling with someone who's got a natural fur coat as a way to keep warm," Jules said, slinging one arm around Camden's neck and mussing the mountain cat's fur.

He'd be happy to tell you more about his Coleman^TM brand thermos!

What? You thought Cup Noodle^TM was the only corporate sponsorship he was in bed with?
