Mathematics: All Classes: Friday 4.14.06 Period 1

"Good morning! School is almost over! Rejoice! Or...panic about upcoming finals, as I'm doing.

Two problems for both classes today, work together to solve them, build models, eat models, bother me, whatever.

1. Cassie, Jon, Luke, Maria, and Sahas baked a batch of 36 cookies, two-thirds of which were chocolate chip. The rest were plain. They each ate some right away. The cookies were so delicious, only one-and-a-half dozen are left, of which half are plain.

Cassie is allergic to chocolate.
Luke ate twice as many chocolate chip cookies as plain cookies.
Sahas and Maria each ate as many cookies as Luke and Cassie combined.
Sahas ate more chocolate chip cookies than Maria.
If all the cookies were eaten by the bakers themselves, how many cookies of each kind did each person eat?

2. Elisa has always wanted a horse, and now she has fallen in love with a buckskin quarter horse gelding named Canyon Sunshine. The horse is priced at $3,000. Elisa's stepfather decides to give her an interest-free loan for the total price of Canyon Sunshine. While paying off this loan, Elisa will also be responsible for the $90 per month upkeep of the horse.

Elisa has $875 in a savings account. She has a steady baby-sitting job, which pays her $5 an hour. She baby-sits 4 nights monthly, 6 hours each night. She also earns $6 an hour working 16 hours each month cleaning the horse stalls at a local stable. Elisa decides to pay back her stepfather's loan as soon as possible with her savings and with every bit she earns monthly.

If Elisa's job situation remains unchanged, how many months will it take her to repay the loan?

Walter uses his wires to cut completely straight sides on a pile of cookies and stacks them like dominos before tipping them over.

He might be thinking about the problems. If Broots asks, he will definitely claim to thinking long and hard about the math of the matter.

He's lying.

Walter gives Broots an innocent look. "Actually, I have administrative dispensation to have my tools on campus. It's one of the first things I took care of when I got here."

"Actually, I mind quite a lot." Walter looked up at Broots and shook his head. The words over my dead body sprang to mind. "I don't take them off."

"I look forward to it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have math to do." Walter picked up his pencil and started writing out the second problem on a sheet of paper.
