If he was completely honest, Gladio was a little bummed that it seemed to have warmed up a little bit and they'd apparently just be missing some snow, if the weather report was to be believed, because snow would have made for a great first class. But he knew that was the nature of the beast, and adapting based on weather was a huge part of the topic at hand, so he'll just be glad that the kids would get an easy one to start out with, good for them.

But they'd have received instructions to meet outside the school, dressed appropriately for the weather, but, if anyone failed to do that, he'd had extra hats and gloves in his pack. It was a pretty small class, though, so hopefully he didn't have to wait too long before they seemed to be all accounted for and he clapped his hands together to get their attention.

"Alright!" he barked, but cheerfully. "Welcome to Wilderness Survival, a class where I hope you like the great outdoors, because we're going to be spending a lot of time out here!" Right at the beginning of winter, too, you lucky, lucky bastards! "My name's Gladio Amicitia, and I'm one of those obnoxious people that actually likes sleeping on the cold hard ground with nothing but a thin bubble of vinyl protecting me from the elements, and this class definitely isn't aiming to get you to be one of those people for yourself, but I do hope to make it at least a little easier for you when you are out there roughing. Just, you know," he shot them a grin, "not too easy.

"Today's going to be pretty simple to start," he said, "mostly so I can get an idea of who I'm working with here. We're heading out into the preserve; I've got the trail marked out so just follow me, until we hit the old campgrounds they've got out there. Once there, we're going to start in on an essential skill at the heart of every camping experience: building a fire. So I hope you're ready to get moving, and that you've brought appropriate shoes, because you're going to probably really be wishing you had by the end of it."

He clapped his hands together again, spun a finger in the air, and pointed in the direction of the preserve before he started walking.

"Let's go!"

Gladio isn't waiting around to take questions, but he'll happily answer any of them as he leads you through into the preserve on the way to your destination. In fact, he's hoping to use the hike as a good chance to get to know everyone a little better en route, because who didn't love a little multitasking?

Alara was actually pretty excited about this class and she’d done her usual morning workout in the dorm gym so she didn’t mind that she was able to get in extra workout with the hike.

She was rather enthusiastic about the hike and had no problem keeping up.

Tahani's face had frozen into a rictus of horror as Gladio's speech had continued.

He liked sleeping outside?! In the cold!! On purpose!

"I think there has been a terrible mistake," she said.

And not just in the footwear she had on, which was definitely not hike-appropriate.

Yeah, Gladio had definitely noticed those shoes. And he was trying to not look too amused about it, because he wa a professional.

Kind of.

"Yeah," he said, "I think you might be right. You got any shoes that are going to be a little easier to walk in than those?"

"Alright!" Gladio announced, as they made their way through the woods to what wa clearly once the old campgrounds, in whatever state that may have currently been in. "This looks like the spot! Time to get to work! Now, nice thing about a spot like this is that it's already pretty flat and clear, which is ideally what you'd like for a good campfire. First thing we're going to need, though, is something to build it with. We're going to want material that's dry, both wood and kindling...."

And, with that, he broke down and demonstrated the best steps for building a good campfire, and once he had his own nice little cheery fire going, he turned his attention to them with a nod.

"Alright, then," he said, "your turn. Let's see what you can do without burning the whole forest down."

Alara had never actually built a campfire before but it seemed straightforward enough. She did have a problem with some of the larger pieces of wood as she kept breaking those but she did eventually get the campfire set up without burning anything down in the process.

He's tempted to just stay out here and enjoy it even after class is done...them finding their way back on their own could be just as much a part of the lesson, too, right?

Boy, they pretty much nailed Gladdy on this one....
