It was the first day of classes and Aphra was actually there on time, and looking somewhat engaged, it was a new semester miracle!

"Hey kids, which is all about getting out of places you don't want to be, like this class for example. To which the answer is make it through the semester in one piece, easy." Look, Aphra thought she was funny. "Since this is the first class, it's time for introductions. We'll start things off pretty simple, name and why you're here.

"I'll go first! I'm Doctor Chelli Aphra, and I'm here because in my long career as a rogue archeologist -" which was totally a real career, "- I've been in numerous death defying escapes and dangerous situations involving everything from rival scholars, bad bosses, rebels, criminals, and ex-girlfriends. Many of them at the same time! And experience has taught me that while smooth talk and high explosives can get you out of most sticky situations, it pays to know which to use when, so now I'm here to share my wisdom with you all."

She pointed at a random student. "You next!"

Yes, that was ex-girlfriends, plural, that Aphra listed as dangerous, death defying situations.

Vi had her hood pulled up over her head and wasn't exactly paying that much attention to the lecture. Not after a night where she'd had to pull the covers off the too big, too soft bed and lie on the floor to get settled enough to sleep.

It a tradition! That makes less work for Aphra.

Name and why you're here. Though can anyone really explain why we're here?

"Vi, and it was on the paper I got handed." No one needed to know it was something she might even have picked given the choice.

"Uh huh, can tell you're really excited about the class too," Aphra replied dryly.

“Hey I’m Guillermo,” Guillermo said with an awkward wave and winced as soon as he’d done that, “Guillermo de La Cruz, uh I was signed up for this class because of my scholarship, so …they must have thought I’d benefit from the class?” he tried, he still hadn’t figured out how this scholarship actually worked.

"Of course you will! Everyone will benefit from being in my class!"

The narrative was doubtful about that.

"Illyana Rasputin," 'Yana intoned, rolling her eyes. "I am here because 'there are some situations you cannot just teleport out of, Illyana, you need other skills.'"

Yes, she did the airquotes with that.

"I am rather sure that is a lie, but you are not an adult who will bullshit us with sunshine and rainbows, so I did not argue too hard against it."

Aphra considered this. "It mightn't solve all of them, but it'll make most of them easier."

"Right? And the ones I cannot leave, I can always teleport the other person somewhere terrible. Like Florida."

Illyana, no. That was not the solution to life's problems.

"Or out an airlock." Aphra, no. "That would've made quitting my last job easier."

"Alexis Rose, and I'm here because you never know when you're going to need a quick escape."

Be it a relationship or a car trunk!

See, Alexis was Aphra's kind of student.

"Exactly, top marks for the assignment." Aphra was not actually grading introductions, that would be too much work on her part.

Libby had spent the better part of her morning before the class basically just sort of getting to know the island so she could give Vi her space in the room...only to then find out that they actually had their first class together, which didn't help at all with the nerves that went along with the fact that this was her first class at an actual school ever, and it wasn't at all what she had been expecting.

But, then again, not a whole lot of this experience so far had been!

Still, when her turn came, she threw back her shoulders, brushed off her skirt a little and fixed her hair before standing up to offer, "Hello, my name is Liberty Hazlett, but y'all can call me Libby, if you like. Most people do. I'm here on a study program with the Fandom Clinic so that I can get started on a career in nursing. I'm...honestly not sure if this class has much to do with that, if I'm honest, but this is my very first class at an actual high school ever, so I guess it...might be so that I can help think better on my feet when I have to? That's probably a good skill for a nurse to have in their pocket, I'd imagine."

She realized a bit too late that she'd already said far more than the other students, but she fought against the urge to wince and, instead, just nodded with a concluding, "Thank you."

"I mean regardless of what they say, most people still shoot at the medic, so it's not a bad idea." That wasn't helpful, Aphra.

"Shoot the..." Libby started, then blinked, paleing slightly, because as many things about the secular world that was being proven false, there were also plenty of things being shown to be true, apparently including rampant gun violence in unexpected places, like schools and hospitals.

She swallowed.

"Well," she tried, "I guess every occupation's going to have its hazards..."

And she better be sure to pay close attention to this class more than ever now!

To be fair, Aphra did spend most of her time back home around terrible, terrible people...

"That's the spirit!"

Tahani was here because she'd figured out that most of Dr. Aphra's classes were movies so she could dedicate her time to nail maintenance, but she couldn't say that.

"Well, it's always good to be able to get out of boring, terrible situations, right? Like family dinners and parties that Bono wasn't actually going to attend."

Especially since Aphra was starting the semester in an actual teaching mood, sorry Tahani.

"Yeah, the situations where you're not allowed to shoot your way out are the worst."

Tahani blinked. "We go to very different parties."

"You're allowed to shoot your way out of boring parties?"

"I've never even thought of trying," Tahani admitted.

She's here!
