A Traveler's Guide to Hyrule; Thursday, First Period [09/30].
"Good morning, everyone!" Sidon greeted the class with his usual brightness and excitement, grinning eagerly at his students as if he just couldn't wait to get into the topic of the day. "I hope you've had a fantastic week! It was so wonderful to get a chance to meet your sister, as well, Alara," he added with a laugh and a nod of acknowledgement to her assuming she was there, "and now, we're moving onto the part of this class where you'll get to meet some new and interesting people as well, because we are going to start diving into the various different races you'll find around my fair land, and today, we shall begin with Hylians!
"Hylians," Sidon continued eagerly, gesturing toward a very crude attempt at drawing on such person on the board, which was little better than a stick figure with an emphasis on some long pointy ears sticking out like triangles from the circle of the person's head, "are the most populous race on Hyrule, and to be completely honest, they are not to dissimilar to Humans here on this planet! The marked difference that I noticed straight away was that human tends to have rounded ears, while Hylians have noticably long and pointed ears!" Here, he broke for a small chuckle. "I distinctly remember, upon my arrival on Fandom Island so many years ago, thinking to myself, 'why, but they're all round-eared Hylians!' I was quite naive and unexperienced back then, and have since learned quite a bit about humans, but I digress. Today, we speak not of humans, but of Hylians!
"It is said that Hylians are decended from the Goddess Hylia herself, and that is why, up until the recent Calamity, the royal family that ruled over Hyrule since time immemorial has been Hylian as well! It is also said that the Goddess Hylia has blessed them with magical abilities, especially in the royal bloodlines, especially through princesses, including the last of our current royal bloodline, the Princess Zelda, who, as we mentioned before, is rumored to be holding Calamity Ganon at bay from complete destruction of the world with those said magical powers.
"Before the Calamity, the most populous settlement of Hylians was the great and sprawling Castle Town, spreading out from the towering shadow of the great Hyrule Castle." Here, another rough sketch appearred, one where you could point out that it was a castle surrounded by building only because you knew to expect it. "Of course, Castle Town was completely destroyed in the Calamity, and is now nothing but a site of tragic ruins overrun by corrupted Guardians, but there were still two settlements of Hylians far to the east that were virtually untouched by the Calamity.
"One of them, Hateno Village, which you can locate in the Necula region on your maps not too far from Mount Lanayru and my own wondrous Domain, is known for its excellent soil and farming prowess, and was spared from the Calamity thanks to the brave soldiers who fought off the scourge at Fort Hateno, just east of the Dueling Peaks Mountains. Nestled in the rolling hills of the area, it is a small, peaceful little village by the sea that also boasts a laboratory where research is done on the ancient Sheikah technology that has both aided us in our fight against Calamity Ganon as well as been used against us with its corrupting influence.
"The other Hylian settlement is just a bit southwest of Hateno Village, through the Faron jungles and settled on the southern seashore, and one of my favorite places to visit, Lurelin Village. Considerably smaller than Hateno Village, Lurelin Village is actually a settlement of fishermen, Hylians after my very own heart! They are tucked away in a far corner of Hyrule, so when the Calamity struck, they were left virtually untouched, and continue to live their quiet fishermens' lives to this day! Some of their homes are build from the hulls of ships, and while they do have a bit of a problem with Lizalfos and Octorok....just as we Zora do!...they also have some of the best fishing around! If you get the chance, you should ask one of them of about the Legend of the Prince who Slew the Fell Octorok; I assure you, it is a fantastic story, with some characters you may even recognize!," him....the Prince who Slew the Fell Octorok was him!, "and I can tell you with confidence and from personal experience that it is an excellent place for a date!"
He threw in a little wink there, before turning to his next sketch, which appeared to be a sort of rounded box with an almost giraffe-like head sticking out of it.
"We also have the Hylians to thank for establishing the stable system, which will be an invaluable resource to any traveler of Hyrule! Scattered all throughout the land, on the side of the main roads that lace through Hyrule, the stables are protected little havens where one might rest up, eat up, chat about quests and adventures, and keep up on the goings-on about the land. If one is keeping a horse, they may lodge their mighty mounts here at the stables and be assured that they will be well cared for! Since travel is dangerous around Hyrule, especially at night, these little oases in the wild can provide a safe place to stay for a while, and any traveler to Hyrule will do well to know them and utilize them to their best advantage! You can recognize them from even a far distance thanks to their distinctive horse-head rooftop decorations!"
With that, Sidon concluded his lecture and turned to the students with another grin. "And so that," he declared, "is the very basics of Hylians! Please, let me know if you have any questions, curiousities, or would like me to elaborate on anything said here today! One can barely be a traveler of Hyrule and not run into a Hylian at every turn, so they are, in a sense, the very backbone of Hyrule and are a wonderful group of people to know!"

"I would be honored to share that particular tale with you!" he declared, grinning toothily at Alara, and then, leaning in as if to create a more intimate atmosphere for the telling of said story, he lifted he hands as a call for attention. "Imagine yourself, a Hylian fisherman in the usually peaceful Lurelin Village, in your boat on the calm waters of Hateno Bay! It is a beautiful day, with a bright and shining sun, the waters cool, the breeze delectable! But, alas, you cannot help but notice something is terribly amiss! For you see, though you cast your line and your nets, it would seem as though the bountiful fish of the bay have all abandoned you! Not a one in sight! Such a great mystery, since you have always had quite the success in this particular area, but, then, as if out of no where, a great turbulance disturbs the water beneath your boat, and you have your answer, for the fish, it would seem, could sense the danger well before you could, and emerging from the great sea is an Octorok, as large and towering as even some of the greatest mountains in all of Hyrule! With flailing tentacles and launching mighty boulders from his ravenous maw, there was no appeasing this great beast, as as he moved his way closer to the village, their destruction seemed evident! They may have been spared the wrath of Calamity Ganon, but would they be spared from the natural monsters from their very own sea???
"Several brave and mighty warriors sought to drive this massive creature to his watery grave once and for all, and every single one of them fell to the Octorok's wrath....and it's hunger! Was there no one who could liberate them from this fiend? They called out to heroes far and wide, and many of the races sent warriors. Not even the air could save the flying Rito from those tentacles! The mighty Gorons dropped like rocks into his snare! Even the Zora, in the very waters they were so intricatedly connected to, could not manage to best him!"
Here, Sidon's smile grew even more, and one clawed finger rose up triumphantly.
"Except for one! There was one Zora who, certain in his ability and fighting prowess, who was certain he could take on the mighty beast and save the village! There was an outcry from his people, for this was not just any Zora, but their Prince! Heir to the Throne! Their future leader, beloved and adored, and it would be a tragedy to lose him to such a monster! But the Prince was a very stubborn and brave young Zora, who ignored the pleas of his people and swam post haste down to Lurelin Village. There, he readied his spear and rushed to the Octorok. The Octorok spat its giant stones at the Zora Prince, but the Zora Prince was swift and managed to avoid everything volleyed at him. But what he could not avoid was the Octorok's mighty breath, sucking him in like so many other warriors befor ehim, swallowing the Prince up whole!
"Oh no!, you must be thinking. Surely, this was the end of the prince! But, ahhh, alas! You would be wrong! Because, while the Prince was now in the belly of the beast itself, he was not going let himself reside there to be digested and defeated! No! After all, the Prince had with him the silverscale spear, a symbol of strengh and power of his people, and he turned that spear toward the belly of the beast, and with its fine and shimmering sharp point, pierced the stomach of his captor and carved his way out! Not only had the Prince gained his freedom, but he had also defeated in the monster in the attempt, freeing the village for his tyranny and swimming away with a spectacular tale...
"And," he added, with a dramatic, almost conspiratorial lowering of his voice, as he grinned at Alara and leaned in a little closer, tilting his head to one side to show off the angry pink scar criss-cross on his side headfin, "a badge of honor from the event. We Zora consider our scars to be signs of our strength, and I must say, this one is still one of my proudest yet! I have faced many great battles since, and will face many great ones more, but this one was one of my very first great acheivements, and I will bear this scar proudly for all my days!"
