A Traveler's Guide to Hyrule; Thursday, First Period [09/16].
It was probably noticeable the moment the students came into the classroom that morning; Sidon's usual exuberance that could be felt radiating from him a mile away had been a bit dampened, although he still greeted them with a smile and a nod. A smile and a nod from Sidon, though, was markedly restrained, and the reason for this much more demure Sidon was about to be explained.
"Good morning," he started. "The subject we will be covering today is a very unfortunate one, but one that is crucial to anyone who plans to be a Traveler of Hyrule, and that is, of course, the event we call the Great Calamity. You see, Hyrule, while a vast and beautiful world filled with rich history and thrilling adventures and ecclectic characters, is a world that is at war, not with each other, not necessarily even with one great enemy, but rather at war with Fate itself! Currently, Hyrule sits in the aftermath of the second Great Calamity. The first happened over 10,000 years ago, when Hyrule was still young and new. A monstrous creature known as Calamity Ganon rose up with the power of a destructive force called Malice to destroy Hyrule and all who called it home. Thankfully, even back then, the highly advanced tribes of Hyrule anticipated such an event, they were able to defend themselves. The Sheikah, which we were briefly introduced to last week, created incredible technology to defeat the Calamity in the form of machines called Guardians and the creation of four Divine Beasts with great power. These innovations, in addition to a great warrior weilding The Sword that Seals the Darkness and a princess with the divine power of the Goddess Hylia herself, these long-distant ancesestors of Hyrule were able to seal the power of Calamity Ganon and protect the land henceforth!
"However, bear in mind, while they were able to seal Calamity Ganon, they had not completely vanquished the powerful force, and it was, alas!, prophesized that, one day, the Seal would be broken, and Ganon would unleash the Calamity on Hyrule once more to finish what he had started so very long ago..."
Sidon was quiet for a moment, nodding to himself as if needing that small push to continue, and gave his students a small smile.
"The Prophesy was true," he said. "Calamity Ganon did break the seal, a little less than one hundred years ago, in my own lifetime, when I was but a small hatchling. The ruler of Hyrule at the time, King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule, had been wise enough to anticipate that such an event might occur in his lifetime, and took action to rediscover the long-buried technology that had helped to seal Calamity Ganon the first time, choosing four Champions from the various races of Hyrule to pilot the unearthed Divine Beasts, reviving the long-quiet Guardians, and turning to his own daughter, the Princess Zelda, to harness the power of the Goddess along side her own Chosen Knight who weilded the Sword that Seals the Darkness.
"Unfortunately, Calamity Ganon had not spent his eons sealed away in vain. He had learned from his mistakes of the past and when he finally broke free again, he had learned much from last time. What had once been our greatest strength against him was turned against us, as the Malice crept into the wildlife of Hyrule, as well as the Guardians, as well as the Divine Beasts. Powerful allies were now insurmountable foes, roaming across Hyrule and destroying everything in their path in Calamity Ganon's name, while the Champions of the Divine Beasts were defeated by the powers that had been building for ten thousand years...
"An army turned against us. Our greatest weapons now useless and unarmed. Our strongest warriors...defeated. Things were looking very grim for Hyrule, indeed! Except for one thing..."
Sidon's pause was both for dramatic effect and to help manage the swell of emotion that telling this story would always inspire in him.
"The Princess," he said, "from a long line of powerful women blessed by the Goddess Hylia herself. She was our very last chance, and it is said that she threw everything she had into holding Calamity Ganon with her own powers, constricting him to the very Castle Hyrule we learned of last week, at the heart of the world, and there is where Calamity Ganon still is, presumably being held in check by the Princess, as she has been holding him for nearly one hundred years...
"The Calamity, then," he said, as if winding down to some sort of conclusion, "is still a very real and ever-present threat looming over Hyrule in its current state. Hopefully, some day very soon, we may find a way to truly defeat him, but, for now, we only hope that Hylia is on our side and strong enough to keep him at bay. But his influence is still very strong throughout all the land. There are few places in Hyrule where you cannot see the results of the devistating destruction of the attack from one hundred years ago. There are creatures that roam the wilderness, bokoblins and lizalfos and moblins, to name a few, tainted by the Calamity, still doing his bidding, and there are still Guardians infused with his power that have spread over the land, their sharp eyes keen on destroying all who cross their paths. And one prays that the hold the Princess has on Calamity Ganon will stay strong, but the frequency of these monsters increasing can only make one worry that the spell is only weakening, and Calamity Ganon may break free of this bond at any moment..."
Sidon paused again, and there was another of those soft, sad smiles.
"I told you it would be an unfortunate story, didn't I?" he said. "But an important one. Hyrule is a beautiful, magnificent place, but it is also wrought with danger at every turn, and every day, we awaken with the question of 'Will this be the day? Will the Calamity finally break free, and will we be prepared to fight when he does?' We may not know the answer to the first questions, but I do know the answer to the last. We will be ready. And we will fight. We will be prepared.
"And," his voice went a little lighter now, even throwing in a faint chuckle as his smile seemed to gain more of its usual verve, "as travelers to Hyrule, I hope you would be ready, too! We will not do so today, because I feel the history of the Calamity is weight enough for anyone's shoulders without having to add an actual physical toil to them, but I will let you know, next week, we will be covering the various threats currently present on Hyrule, as well as the one looming over us, and how one might best defend themselves against it. For today, though, if you'd like to ask any questions or expand on anything in today's lesson, I would greatly enjoy exploring that. But, if not, then I think we'll close early today, because there is a great world out there to explore and enjoy, and we must never take that for granted."
