Superheroing 101 - Friday 9/10, 3rd period

Stark was not on a skateboard today and he was grateful for that. He’d walked into the classroom on his own two feet without a wheel in sight.

“Things seem back to normal this week,” he said once everyone had arrived. “Normal for here, anyway. I’ve stopped being a plant in the mornings and skateboarding. If any of you had anything odd happening last week I hope it wasn’t traumatic.”

“I suppose dealing with the unexpected would have to be part of being a superhero, wouldn’t it? You’ll get plenty of practice at that, here. This island is very, very good at unexpected things. Giving us wings, or turning us into plants, turning us into animals, trapping us in holes, or giving us children that might not be possible, or...any number of other things. I could spend all day naming things this island has done that I didn’t expect.”

“That’s a good topic, I think? Or two. Unexpected things and other things you might need to deal with as a hero. Which might be unexpected, or maybe not so unexpected if you can think of them. Does anyone have thoughts on that?”

"I think," said Sakaki after a moment, considering how she was fully convinced that, based on the last two weeks, her Fridays were pretty much guaranteed to start with healthy dose of unexpected, "you're right, you probably do have to deal with the unexpected a lot as a superhero, so I suppose going to this school is helpful, because you start to think on your feet more and not be...as shocked."

She felt she still had a long way to go with that one, but she'd already gotten a little better!

"Kidnappings," Illyana sighed, clearly done with the concept. "You have to expect kidnappings. Not just people trying to kidnap you, but your non-superhero friends and family are targets."

"Twice." Illyana was clearly disgruntled about this. "There was a third attempt, but by that point I had my powers."

So, she'd stabbed him through his heart, rather than ever be taken again.

"But what heroes don't really realize is that they rarely face the consequences of their actions. Consequences tend to find easier targets."

"That's how you get supervillians," Illyana agreed, nodding. "One day, you're debating peaceful resistance versus millitant action, the next, you're fighting each other in downtown throwing things at each other with your teams of super-powered adopted children, and driving up local insurance rates."

Look, sometimes a girl just had to poke fun at her brother, his friends, and the nonsense they got up to.

"The small business owners in New York are very vocal about it," Illyana replied cheerfully. "You can't go to the deli without hearing about how the latest Avengers throw-down broke their cousin's neighbor's barber's front window, and now their insurance has gone up against metahuman damage."
