"Wine" Tasting and Drinking Games

Anyone showing up for class today would notice some ominous bottles filled with clear greenish liquid sitting on the bar.

"So. Today's wine choice is absinthe," Jessica began. "And yeah, I know. It's not wine. Whatever. We're fucking drinking it."

She pulled off the cap and started to pour a glass for everyone. "The taste profile is that shitty black jelly bean you accidentally ate with a hint of dusty herbs that someone keeps in their pantry but only break it out during thanksgiving dinner so they don't really taste like they should."

"Oh and supposedly it's supposed to make you hallucinate but I guess that's a bullshit urban myth. So if you start seeing fairies or whatever then they're probably real. As for tonight's drinking game we're all going to pretend we're at some teenager sleepover and play truth or dare."

Because the combination of absinthe and truth and dare is a chemical reaction that Jessica wanted to see happen.

"Let's start shall we?"

"Pretty sure the hallucinations were because this used to be made with wormwood," Duke said, lifting his glass. He was, of course, no stranger to absinthe. "I'm going to need some sugar, a lighter, and a silver spoon, please."

"Okay..." Jessica said carefully looking around the bar and finding everything but the lighter, which she was able to take from her own jacket. "Please don't set the bar on fire."

Duke snorted. "Please. I'm practically a professional."

He piled a bit of sugar on the spoon and drizzled some absinthe over it, then lit the boozy sugar on fire and let it burn for a moment, watching it caramelize. Then he blew it out, dunked the sugar into the absinthe, and tossed the whole thing back like -- well, a professional.

"Ah! Reminds me of my summer in Prague."

"I think you made drinking alcohol way to complicated," Jessica said, pouring Duke another glass.

"Please," Duke said. "I'm simply honoring a classic. Not all of us can make being a total trash fire look as good as you can, Jess."

"Hey, I just set the trash on fire. The flames do all the work," she joked.

"So that's the secret. I'll have to keep that in mind."

"I should've known you knew how to drink that properly," Lucifer teased.

Or sort of teased, with a general overarching sense of approval.

"Of course I do," Duke said, favoring him with a grin. "I am a well-traveled man."

"Is there a specific absinthe story you haven't told me yet?" Lucifer wondered, grinning back.

Jeez, keep it in your pants, Luce.

"I don't know," Duke said, tilting his head. "Did I tell you about the time I spent an evening with a couple Czech girls who only spoke Czech and German? I didn't know any Czech yet and my own German wasn't nearly fluent at the time, but we managed to get by with hand gestures and key phrases. . . ."

"You did not," Lucifer said, sipping his own drink. "So were these exclusively solo hand gestures, or did they get a bit more hands-on along the way?"

"We were drinking absinthe," Duke said. "So, uh. I think you can probably guess how quickly they got hands-on."

"Mhm," Lucifer said. "Obviously they had good taste." Beat. "In drinks as well as humans."

"They did," Duke agreed, leaning over to kiss him on the cheek. "And so do I."

Lucifer grinned in spite of himself.

(This was disgusting.)

"Speaking of," he said, a bit softer, "How did surf practice go?"

"Good," Duke said. "Octavia has gotten very skilled at getting back on the board." He shook his head fondly. "You know that little furrow she gets between her brows when she's really focused on getting something right? I love that furrow. . . ."

"It is a very gorgeous furrow," Lucifer agreed, smiling. "Charming, really."

"She would be so mad if she heard us talking about it," Duke said fondly.

"She'd scowl about it and mutter something in Trig," Lucifer agreed, "Which is also charming."

"Exactly," Duke said, lifting his glass in a little toast.

So did Lucifer. "To Octavia," he said, "Who takes everything as seriously as it probably should be taken, and yet all the rest of us fail to meet the bar."

They were hopeless.

Duke laughed and clinked his glass against Lucifer's. "To Octavia, a perfect balance to our mutual irreverence."
