Ignis figured a day like this one would come eventually, where the weather didn't really suit his class at all. True, dealing with rain would be a normal part of any camping experience, but this was Cooking for Camp and Field, not merely Camp and Field by itself, although perhaps it wouldn't hurt to explore that as a more broad topic.

But he had a lesson plan and intended to stick with it, and he had been a little uncertain about the quality of the fishing around the island anyway, so when they class made it out to their meeting spot, there was a portal waiting for them.

They absolutely loved him at Portalocity this week...

"Today," he informed them, "we're taking our camp and field class on a bit of a field trip, as we will be exploring the inner angler in us all. That's right. Today, we will be fishing, and not only that, but we will be learning what to do with our fish once we catch them and plan to prepare them for consumption. If you already have some experience in fishing, excellent, I look forward to seeing what you catch. If not, not to worry, I will break down the basics and the equipment once we're settled in our new location. We're going to a spot I know of that is excelling angling for both beginners and experts, and is quite in the wilderness, as well, so that we can get the full camp and field experience. So, without further ado..."

He gestured toward the portal in case anyone in particular would like to take the lead, but not before adding, "Oh. And once we arrive, do try to stay close to the fishing spot and avoid getting lost, if you can."

Fishing?

The portal was taking the class off to Malacchi Pond in the Duscae region of Eos, which offers a wide variety of fish, a quiet little location surrounded by rocks and trees. Ignis has, of course, brought the camping gear for cooking later, but first, he needed to talk about fishing itself and how to do it, which also involved a discussion on gear, with an extra emphasis on choosing a rod and an encouragement to try a variety to see what works best. Then, he demonstrated, waiting to get a bite before explaining as he reeled it in (thankfully successfully the first time) and displayed a modest-sized alstor bass for his troubles.

"Ah, yes," he said, somewhat proudly, "this will do nicely. Now, once you've had your fish, this is where the fun part comes in, and that is preparing it to be cooked."

So if anyone wanted to spend their morning learning how to scale, skin, gut, debone, and fillet a fish on the spot, well, then, it was your lucky day!

"Since the fishing and the preparation itself is so involved," Ignis added, once his fish was clearly ready, "we'll keep ther recipes today simple. You can, of course, explore more complex ways to prepare your fish at camp when you have the time, but sometimes, all you need is some simple ingredients, our good friend foil, and a nice fire, and you're on your way to a fresh and satisfying meal from start," he gestured to the pond, "to finish. Let me show you..."

Now that Ignis has hopefully shown you enough of the ropes to feel confident in fishing if you weren't already, find yourself a pole and test your luck with the fish in Malacchi Pond!

There would be no getting lost today. There would, however, be some fish hooks getting caught in long skirts. It was quite undignified, and Lucille ended up having to ask for help.

And if/when you do catch a fish, try to go through the steps of not only preparing it to be cooked, but also then cooking it up!

Hopefully, no one is particularly squeamish!

Lucille certainly wasn't squeamish, and it turned out she had a bit of a talent gutting fish. Was this a surprise?

Yes, he had considered bringing in a certain royal fishing enthusiast for this lesson, but he also figured that said royal fishing enthusiast would actually be pretty terrible in teaching anything about fishing and would likely just end up annoyed that anyone was disturbing his efforts.
