Summer Shenanigans, Wednesday, May 26, 2021

When everyone arrived in the park, they would notice that the observation bleachers had been moved to the center of the area and the rest of it was covered in what seemed to be a squirrel-sized Ninja Warrior obstacle course.

Surely this would end well.

Anakin--Beaker was nowhere to be found--was standing behind the folding table that normally had a number of terrible t-shirts for the teams to wear. This week the shirts seemed...strangely tiny...but that was probably nothing to worry about, nor was the piles of brightly colored fake rabbits' feet, nor was the ray gun propped up against the table leg.

Anakin was from space, after all. Maybe today he brought a ray gun?

"We already did an obstacle course around town," Anakin began, yelling through the megaphone, "and one with mud last summer. So this year, to save money, I made this physically difficult course smaller--" sure, "--and will simply shrink you all to fit into it!"

...wait.

"Thank you to Barry for your assistance in this matter. The gun works as intended and is completely safe, right Beaker?"

Beaker, squirrel-sized, saluted from on top of his pile of t-shirts. "Meep!"

And if you can't trust Beaker for scientific safety, who could you trust? "You will be in six teams of four. Each of you must make a complete circuit around the course, though you may assist each other in figuring out how to get through the various obstacles. Your brains and mouths still work, after all. Listen for your names and then come down to get zapped--" technical term--"and receive your accessories." He did not say anything about not using powers this week.

PS: those aren't rabbits' feet. They are synthetic squirrel tails on belts for you to wear. There are also headbands with ears. Think this, but with a shirt, too.

Voluntolds, get ~~oh-so-handwavily and without any mishaps~~ shrunk, grab your shirts, tails, and ears, and complain to anyone who will listen. Anakin will not be listening.

The course begins with you climbing up a pole to a wooden platform. The entire course takes place three feet from the ground, which isn't a big deal when you're normal sized, but it more challenging now that you're all wee. You then run across a rickety ladder which was designed to spin over and drop you on the ground. Then you run through a tall wooden maze; jump through two platforms of foam-covered tumblers designed to dump you on the ground, one vertical and one horizontal; face off against a decoy squirrel standing on a pad that will launch you into the air if you linger too longer wondering what the hell a decoy squirrel was doing on the course; then another jump to get to a bridge made of slinkees which will not hold your weight; another jump to a place to pause and get your photo taken by sticking your head through one of those tourist-trappy plywood cutout things (and Anakin is taking every. single. picture and will treasure them always); and then a six part quad step jump, where the boards are stuck at 45 degree angles and you need to jump from one to the next. If you slow down, you'll loose momentum and fall back to the ground and have to start the whole thing over.

The course ends with a birdfeeder full of nuts and rum set on a weight-sensitive platform. Each player goes through and lands on the platform, signaling that their teammate should start the course at the beginning. The first teammate who lands there after the entire team has gone through the course will trigger all of the prizes, celebratory banners, and a confetti cannon.

His is an evil laugh.

One of the radio squirrels has replaced the squirrel decoy! You must bribe them with rum or juicy gossip or they will activate the trap door they're standing on and drop you to start the course over again.

"I'm already not tall," Clare squeaked from eight inches off the ground, "so this is just ridiculous."

She paused and looked at her shirt. "The clothes are cute, though?"

a) THIS IS AMAZING and b) can the voluntolds remain shrunk for the rest of the afternoon should their player choose that?

Steve was going to be laughing for a long time about his extremely hideous squirrel themed aloha shirt. He wondered if Chin had one of these already.

a) THANK YOU! and b) Sure! But it wears off by evening.

Look, a tiny alien in a tiny Hawaiian shirt glaring in Anakin's direction!

"Why."

Guess who kept looking down and noticing the squirrel on his shirt, getting midly startled and freaking out a little and trying to brush the squirrel off it?

If you guessed Troy, congratulations! You guessed right!

Seriously. You'd think after the third time or so he'd start catching on, but why they gotta make him look so realistic??

Afternoon is all I wanted, thank you! \o/

Troy had at least one round to get a little warmed up and watch to see how the course went, and so he rubbed his hands together then crouched down to get ready to really show everyone how it was done. He could do this. He was the star althelete over here, he could do this!

And honestly? The hardest part was realizing that the squirrel decoy was just a decoy, and maybe it was just because he was squirrel-sized or something right now, but squirrelfriend was lookin' kinda fine right now, not gonna lie.

Beaker ran as fast as his wee Muppet-y legs would take him over to the pole and gazed up and up and up and up. When "amazing physical prowess" came to mind, Beaker was not the next immediate visual, but fortunately he had science!

Meeping triumphantly, he igniting his (prototype) jetpack and soared straight up--right into the bottom of the platform.

Right then. Take two. This could take a bit, Team Squirrel Yoga...

"Fantastic!" Sidon proclaimed, getting a load of himself with all the same proporitions before looking around at the world that suddenly seemed so much larger in every respect. "Oh, this is wonderful! So this is how it must feel for you all on a regular basis!"

Sidon.

He chuckled a little to himself. "Marvelous!"

He was so tiny! It was so novel! He still didn't really care much for the whole wearing a t-shirt of it all, but he was always a good spirit regardless, and this was just...

Why, he hadn't felt so smoll in almost a century! Brilliant!

"Yeah, right," Summer snorted as she looked at her shirt. "In their dreams."

Oh, Summer, you had no idea, did you?

But whatever, she was here to totally represent it for Team All L.S. Plus One.

“Are we sure this shirt won’t give the radio squirrels ideas?”

Don’t mock the squirrels when you were squirrel-sized, Duke.

Anakin laughed. "They helped pick them out."

Summer considered her competition for this round, considered the course, almost considered just saying Fuck it and throwing her round because, ohmygod, seriously with some of this stuff? But then Jessica had to go and be freakin' awesome on her run ~~presumably~~ and give her a head start and she could not just throw that away, so she buckled down, felt that competitive edge rise up inside of her, and she took the the course with a determination not to lose their advantage.

Which meant she was slightly annoyed when Troy started to pass her up and wondered if there was any sort of way she could sabotage him, but he was actually kind of good at this, what the hell, Troy?

She bet she would have beaten him if she'd have turned into an actual squirrel again and not just squirrel-sized and accessorized.

"Sometimes I really worry about his brain," Ben said, looking down at his very personalized "Your Name Here" squirrel bird feeder shirt.

"I think it's something along the lines of 'if you have a shrink ray gun, you're going to use your shrink ray gun,'" Steve said. "So the bigger question is why did Barry make Anakin a shrink ray gun."
